Faulty Pump?

Hi there:)

A few years back my friend purchased one of the Ultima H²OC Trident pre built systems and has recently started suffering constant shut downs.

I had a quick check and noticed the CPU was quickly overheating.

I'm not that familiar with watercooling but wanted to ask...

Should i feel the pump inside the res working away because there seems to be no flow from the res?

This is the hardware in question

With a bay res like that you should see the water sloshing or at least moving about if the pump was working. Symptoms suggest the pump is indeed borked.

Thanks for the quick response..

No water sloshing around no noise or vibration so all fingers point to the pump.

What do you guys think would be the best solution to this problem?

Will it be a new bay res? or can i get the pump on it's own?

Can anyone suggest a decent replacement.

Thanks for your time guys:)

you could buy a 2.2 DCP pump from EK and add it to the loop if you wanted it wouldn't be hard. Or you could buy a new bay res pump combo.

Only downside of a bay res pump combo is when the pump goes you can't just replace the pump.

Laing DDC-1T Pro 10W plus res top would be my choice for that loop, losing the combo res. You could try and reuse just the bay res as is but you would be forcing water through a knackered pump and thus unecessarily restricting flow. The other option would be to take the impellor out of the broken pump if possible, or see if the pump can be completely removed. This is assuming they don't want to take advantage of the situation to justify a complete upgrade of the system which would need more investment in the cooling in total rather than just a new pump.

IIRC stalled pumps don't massively restrict loops (based on either skinee or martins testing of serial vs. parallel pumped loops~)

The guy is more than happy to throw cash at his problem, it's really just me not knowing what the best course of action is.

I assume i should see the liquid passing through the tubes if the pump is operational?

I only know air, never dealt with water cooling at all and the thought of messing around with it just makes me nervous. Although it does look like a fairly simple self contained system I'd much rather put him on an air solution.

Can anyone link me to some cooling systems in the shop that are similar to what he has currently installed but perform better?

Cheers guys:)

Looking at the state of that system and the tubing and him not knowing how to look after a water cooling system or just not having the time i would personally move him to air. Its not about how much money he has to spend its about if he can look after the system.

And air cooling system sounds like a much better option imho.

For air cooling, something like this Noctua would be very good bet, alternatively he could look at a closed loop water system such as one of the Corsair Hydro or Antec Khuler options, I'd agree with Mick that looking at the state of that pic he should prob steer clear of proper watercooling as it does not look as though he knows/can be bothered to maintain it properly
