Faulty Samsung SP2504C Drive?

Hi there,

I got a Spinpoint SATA-II 250Gb off ocuk last week as the latest addition to a very quiet pc (Arctic Freezer 64 cpu cooler + Zalman vf-900 VGA cooler inside an antec sonata II). I got the Spinpoint to replace an old, noisy Maxtor DM 9 thinking that this would be the last step in Silencing my pc. I was told "whsiper quiet" operation - terms like "silent seek" were mentioned and an operation so quiet, "you won't even know its on..." Well, I can hear it chugging, grinding and seeking all night (and all morning too) as I run my filesharing agent. Was I naive to believe all the marketing crap or are these drives indeed meant to be quiet and I just happened to get a faulty one? Could it be that they are inaudible when run in a machine with standard fans/coolers but can easily be heard in quiet machines? Do I need to turn on 'Silent Seek' (because its the seek noise that I can hear most)? No matter how I try to convince myself that its quiet, it really isn't that much better than a 4 year old Maxtor DM 9...

your not the only one mate, i think i,m a victim of that as well and i got two of em as well, do you notice slight tardis noise? ia slo have the sonata so i wasntpleased either.

and i dont know anything about two motors can someone elborate on this?

many thanks

Hi,

I've checked my motor out (go here for info --> http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?p=212078&sid=d4842c2152d8d1777ee2c502bd7fe534 ) and I've got a 'Nidec' motor, which is meant to be the quieter of the two motors (the other being a jvc). I've turned on AAM using samsung's HUTIL but it hasn't really made much difference. I'm now looking into some ways of elastically suspending the drive to cut out the seek noise (info here --> http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=8240&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 )

I'm hoping that using an elastically suspended method will kill all seek noise. However, if the seek noise were as inaudible as Samsung (and many on these forums) claim, there shouldn't be any need for special drive mounting measures...
