hi all,

i seem to have intermittent network issues at home.

I have virgin as my ISP and the hub 3.0 is situated by the tv downstairs (wifi has been disabled on the hub). Directly connected to the router is the tv, ps4 and sky box etc. One of the 4 ports on the hub is plugged into an ethernet socket by the tv, which runs upstairs to my shoe cupboard.

In the cupboard is my CCTV/NVR, patch panel and netgear prosafe JS524-200EUS 24 port switch, unifi AP (for wireless). all rooms' ethernet ports all terninate here into the patch panel and switch. the unifi AP is connected directly to the switch.

My issues are that randomly, anything connected to the switch loses its internet connection (including wifi). Anything that is connected to the Hub 3.0 remains connected to the internet fine.

A restart of the switch remedies the problem and it all works fine again until the same thing happens. It does not happen at any specific time and will come on randomly.

As it is remedied by a restart, is the switch faulty ??

Could be. You need to find out whether it's the switch that's the problem or the connection from it to the router.

When the devices connected to the switch lose their internet connection can they still communicate with each other?

Have you tried using different ports on the router and switch for the interconnect? Have you tried with different cables?

Is it one of their switches covered by their lifetime warranty?

Yes it is covered by a lifetime warranty if I’m not mistaken. I haven’t tried any other ports, only just power cycling

Have you tried just unplugging the cable linking the switch to the VM router, rather than power cycling it?
I haven’t done that yet, will try it next time it happens. By doing that though I will lose Internet to the rest of the house including my UniFi AP’s.

when this problem happens I cannot connect to the Unifi AP’s, so my phone just reverts back to 4G and any other devices display no internet connection ( for example the echo show I have displays it has disconnected)

Sorry I meant "and then plugging it back in" - e.g. resetting the link rather than the whole switch. Would be good to know what the port LEDs are doing as well.

It’s going to take me a while to work out which port corresponds to what room etc As I have forgotten

but I have noticed when this problem happens, pretty much all LEDs on the switch are flickering ( most rooms have 2 Ethernet ports and are in use)

Just a quick update - I bought a second hand tp link 24 port gigabit switch and hey presto not a single disconnection. Been rock solid ever since.

think I will message netgear and get a replacement
