Faulty WD Red??

hi guys, i got a synology ds413j and stuck in four 2TB WD Red drives. When going through the setup process of the NAS it kept failing when installing the synology diskstation manager program. I also noticed that one of the hard drive lights was flashing green and all the rest were solid green. So i took out the drive that was flashing on the NAS and went through the setup process again and it worked fine. I set the NAS up with synology's own RAID. I then tried to expand the volume with the drive but it sat doing its thing for about 8 hours and didnt expand to the 8TB i was looking for.

Pretty sure its a faulty drive but what do you guys think??

I bought the drive and NAS through overclockers so should i just RMA the Hard drive??

My synology ds413j did a parity consistency check this morning and after it completed it said that the RAID was degraded! There are 3 drives in it and they all say the health of them is normal. I ran a SMART test on each one are they are fine.

Has anyone had this problem before? NOt sure what to do!

I still have all my stuff on other HD as i have been just transfering the stuff over to it the last few days.
 
Just had another one die now. Only been running for 3 days:( It says that the RAID is degraded but wont tell me which drive has falled!!

If you originally had 4 drives in your NAS and now only have three, then it may have setup the raid using all 4 disks originally. So now it only has three the raid is degraded as it's "lost" 25% of it's original disk configuration even though the remaining three test out fine.

Basically means it's running fine on 3 drives but will not cater for an additional disk failure. The degraded alert should go away when you insert a new 4th disk and it's able to recreate parity data.

Just sent my own brand new WD Red 2TB drive back as well under RMA. :(

They haven't been out long enough to be able to make any judgement on their long term reliability.

There's nothing special about them that would make dead on arrival any less likely.

The packaging of OEM drives seems to have gone downhill. They often used to come in proper cut foam boxes, knowadays most aren't even upto the standard required if you're RMAing a dead drive back to the manufacturer.
 
Well, I am have had only one of my Red drives fail on me, and that was because I managed to drop my case and the power connector broke off. :)

Now, I must say, Western Digital were very good about it. I emailed their support to see if there was anyway to get the pcb replaced, and their reply was sorry, no, but provide us with a photo of the damage and we will replace the whole drive for you.

So I now have a new 3tb Red sitting here while my old one wings it way back to WD since they also provide advanced replacement (sorts out the packaging problem quite well).

Also, when I got my new drive, the first thing I did was a backup of my data (it is my backup drive). Stuck it in the external caddie built into the top of my Xigmatek Elysium, and after a couple of hours and almost 2tb copied it was barely warm to the touch and was so quiet that I had to check several times to see if it was even turned on.

So as you can see, overall I am very happy, even though it was my own stupid fault to being with.
 
Thanks guys. I think I linked the 3 year warranty to better reliability when I was researching what drives to use in my Synology NAS.

As you all say at least if they do fail they are warranted and hopefully WD seem to be on the ball.
