Favourite Guitar Solo's?

Steve Vai - Animal
Steve Vai - For the love of god
Steve Vai - Bad Horsie Live at london Astoria
Joe Satriani - Crying
Joe Satriani - Surfing with the Alien
Joe Satriani - Summer Song.

Outtro to Jon Gomm's Temporary. From about 3:27. The harmonics with double tuning peg bend at 3:53 is quite possibly the most beautiful thing I have heard from any instrument ever. Unfortunately youtube doesn't quite do it justice:

You get a better view of it in this one from about 1:54

Frank Zappa - Black Napkins, Muffin Man, Willie the Pimp, Inca Roads, Montana.

Very good track selection but nothing beats the album "shut up and play yer guitar" followed by "Guitar". ;) If I had to choose a favourite, it would be "Watermelon in Easter Hay" But there are too many and all too good.

Listen to some zappa FFS!

This guy here, he's correct.

Wow I think i have actually made you genuinely angry by liking Jack White! Sorry about that, not my intention.

As you bring him up, i'm actually not a huge fan of Zappa. The man could play for sure but I find much of what I have heard self indulgent without ever drawing me in. Listening to it, I feel like I am intruding on his music rather than him sharing something he loves with me. Bit like listening to Joe Satriani

Zappa, self indulgent? I know this is a slightly older thead but you like ...Jack White and then continue on to say Zappa is self indulgent? I cry for you on the inside.

And watermelon on easter hay is beauty in simplicity.

One of the best Guitar and piano solos for that matter are in the same song

Gives me shivers when I listen to the piano part.

Ok, there's going to a few Petrucci solos here.

Dream Theater - Under a Glass Moon.
Fast forward to 4:35

Lines in the Sand

Fatal Tragedy
At 4:37

Pink Floyd - Comfortably numb

Steve Vai - For the love of God
This just floors me every time

I can't believe that when I started the thread I didn't bother embedding any vids! :D

EDIT: Seems a couple of those have the embedding disabled but they're still some of my faves and therefore worth a listen. :p

Beyond the realms of death... Judas priest. Jaw droppin solo and I know im a handy guitarist myself. lol.

My favourites are the solo at the end of Telegraph Road (Dire Straits) and the solo in the middle of Time (Pink Floyd). Comfortably Numb goes without saying!

\edit I think the Comfortably Numb recording at Live 8, although they were a little rusty, has one of the best renditions of the solo. If you watch at about the 5:00 point onwards, all of the band are just in the "zone".

Some great choices in this thread. Happy to see some dream theatre, nevermore and Dire straits along with the usual (and fully deserved) usuals.

Not quite a solo and will get flamed for mentioning them but I love the guitar dueling in Dragonforce. For me the speed of both of them is unreal is unreal (especially as Sam is usually drunk on stage when playing them).

Skip to 3:00 for the guitars

Anything else I would add would just be a repetition of names already mentioned.
