FEAR is NOT scary

the only time something made me jump when i played fear was when i had my headphones on, was playing in a quiet area when i could tell something was going to happen soon, i heard some screeching sound in the game and my dad tapped me on the shoulder  i nearly touched the moon :D

I found it made me quite edgy at some points, you can hear something and you know something is going to jump out on you, but just don't know when....
Stalker does the same thing but not quite to the same extent.
Have been made jump a fair few times with both games (aswell as the Ravelnholm level on HL2)

Played through FEAR so many times now, still love it :D Runs dead smooth and looks awesome here :D

I was playing Doom 3 the other day and I only ever play it in these following conditions....

A really windy night...
passed midnight
lights off
headphones on
windows open slightly....

then suddenly I felt this licking at my right leg, I jumped up (nearly crapped myself) grabbed the mouse and held it back as I was about to throw it at what ever beast was just trying to eat my leg.

Looked to see the puppy looking up at me wagging her tail :p

Damn dog! lol

I got scared from Fahrenheit :( I want to play it again but I'm too scared :p

Whenever I go into a restaurant toilet now I'm always looking behind me.

I didn't find it scary or atmospheric at all.

I always say this in FEAR threads, but Condemned met those expectations.

I loved Doom 3, TONS of atmosphere. Play it late at night :)

Fear wasn't that scary tbh, was fun but not that you owuldn't want to play it.
Imo. though doom 3 is scray, the zombier or whatever often freaked me out if they came unexpected.

Yeah Doom 3 makes me brick it, Also my house mates like to sneek up on me when I'm playing it with my headphones on ! gits !

i really dont know what was scary about doom 3, i played fear and it scared to crap out of me, stalker is also pretty scarey in the underground parts. But doom 3 was definatly not, i played FEAR and stalker recently, and it scared me, but i played doom 3 in 2004 when i was 13 and i played through it all not being scared once.

I enjoyed the game. I wouldn't really call it scary or even that atmospheric (though it tried, bless it). One section that did make me jump a bit was when you first start fighting the invisible guys and they're running around above the ceiling tiles/dropping behind you/etc.

Tried to play Extraction Point and it felt like a mediocre fan mod. Wasn't impressed :/

You lot obviously dont immerse yourselves in the game, probably just thinking of it as a game demaning your reactions to win. I find when I watch movies or games I get very 'into' them & almost emotionally involved at times putting myself in the place of the character, hence leading me into jumping 10 foot straight up into the air when playing Condemned, turning it off & hiding it on the shelf :)

I agree with you. I tend to immerse myself in games and movies as well and "take the place" of the main character. I don't have FEAR, but i tried to SP Demo, that scared me the first time i tried it. I can pla it all the way through just about.

Ravenholme in HL2 made me jump a lil bit, mainly in the grassy area that you start off in as it's quite dark and you can't see if anything is hiding behind that tree. Then as you get to that area where you go into the building that leads to a roof or something, that scares me a bit because you're vulnerable from almost all directions.

I do enjoy killing the zombies with the car on a rope in one of the other levels though.

Quake 4, near the start when that guy says watch the ceiling, i froze for about 5 minutes and then went on. Never completed it, mainly because i can't be bothered/would rather play a different game.

Robbing The Cradle (Thief 3).

If any game ever gets half that unpleasant in my lifetime, I will be impressed; horrible, horrible place.

The Hotel in Bloodlines is good **SPOILER**

but loses its edge after you see the first ghost/light pop.

I can't play FEAR, or Doom3 and especially not System Shock 2 - the problem is I _always_ end up buying them even though I'm fully aware of my problem :D

I think it's an immersion thing, if you can't let go of reality and imagine yourself actually in the game then it's never going to scare you, same with films, books etc.

Edit: The Thief series never bothered me apart from the zombie missions, the rest I was quite happy sneaking around :)

Zombies in TDS freaked me a little, but not overly scared. Just "oh ****, not zombies again. " I haven't made it to the Cradle, yet. Heard it's the scariest level in gaming history. Will have to get back to you on that one.
FEAR made me jump, 'cause I get shocked easily, but I didn't find it particularly scary. Same for the bit in Fahrenheit where the guy closes the mirror/cabinet thing and the guy is right behind him.
I did however find a bit in one Poirot thing scary, some weird mask thing at the window going "tap tap tap tap" on the window, and it was a guy holding it by a string. Still freaks me out. *shudders* Weird.

For me, how i go about playing the game makes a huge difference, i can easily go through rambo style complete the game uin the quickest time and be unaware of the game atmosphere and scene's, but thats really not how the game should be played, if you take the time to evolve the gameplay in the way the creaters intended its far more satisfiying you get longer out of the game and its more enjoyable.

Games can scare me, doom 3 i found very hard to play without saying saying "Screw IT" and play as if i was rambo simply because the atmosphere was intense and scary.

Fear was an awsome game, i wouldnt say it scared me, maybe a little at the end when your running out of the underground base thing and loads of shadows come out, but certainly stages that made me jump.

I think the thing with the Thief games are, you can't really Rambo it; you are just likely to get pounded. I wouldn't say the The Cradle was scary, as such, but it has a very dark atmosphere (which only gets worse shortly after you complete the first part). I prefer to have my immersive games leave me constantly on edge. Thief 3 and System Shock 2 are the only ones, that I can think of off the top of my head, that have ever done that.

Plenty of games have had great moments but the suspense was always relieved in some small way. System Shock 2 (and Thief 3, to a lesser extent) had me looking over my shoulder, wondering what would happen next, almost all the time.

A few shocks here and there don't do it for me; I prefer chiller to thriller :)

The only game thats ever "freaked me out" was System Shock 2.

I didn't like Doom 3 at all. AvP I loved, but I wouldn't class it as scary, it just used very limited lighting to produce cheap surprises to make the player jump. System Shock 2 on the other hand made me wary to turn any corner, or enter a new room, the use of lighting, and most importantly sound in that game gave me a lot brown pants moments. If Bio Shock can have a fraction of that atmosphere i'll be very very happy!
