Everytime I try to fire up the free multiplayer version of FEAR it keeps telling me "FEAR has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." :(

I've tried downloading it and reinstalling it twice but no luck! :(

Has anyone else had this happen to them? If so, how did you get around it?

Before I forget my specs, if you need them, are:
AMD Athlon 64 Winchester @ Stocks (2.0 Ghz)
GeIL 1024Mb (1Gb) RAM @ Stocks
HIS Excalibur x800xl @ Stocks
Samsung 160Gb HDD
DFI UT NF4 Motherboard

Everything is at stocks really. Not overclocked nothing.

You dont have Xfire running do you? I read in another post here somewhere that it was causing major problems with some games and if i remember correctly fear was one of them.
Possibly check your directx is up to date too?

Ah it wont be that then, xfire is sorta like gamespy for finding your friends in games etc.

Googling your problem shows most people pointing the finger of guilt at hard drive emulators or punkbuster as the cause. But no proof or a fix.

Remove the XP update KB917422 using add/remove programs and all will be well

IT WORKS! :D

Yeh. It turns out a lot of people with this said update installed get rapage errors just like me. Lets hope Sierra release a patch for this soon.

Edit: Thanks ;)

Kaspersky and the security windows update patch seem to crash everything

I think its Kaspersky that needs to look long and hard at its "product"!
