Hi all, am looking for some advice. At moment i have a ultra wide screen monitor , and i really love it, when games actually support it . I have just had enough of the black borders around some of my latest games , even after looking for some fixes on line . My latest was dark souls three, lovely borders around it , and its not the only one ,although some older games work great . So have deiced to go back to a normal monitor for gaming and am looking for suggestions. I have even been told that a tv may be good enough. I am running a 980 gpu and am looking for something around the 30 inch or above , So frustrated with all these black borders, i wont even play the games anymore . So any advice be great. Thank you all

Have you tried THIS site for Ultra Wide help for games which your having problems with? Also i would keep the Ultrawide for the best of both worlds :)

Here Dark souls III is talked about and they are waiting for them to create a fix :)

Never had a problem with any new titles and black bars at the side with my 21:9, could you name some?
Dark Souls 3 being the first and only one, but then none of the previous games came supported, this developer just doesn't bother with 21:9 and probably never will. However I'm betting there's a fix before the games been out a week.

Don't understand the OP tbh. If you can't run the odd game in 21:9 then just run it in 2560 x 1440. If you buy another monitor, what are you going to buy - err 2560 x 1440.

Are those side bars REALLY that annoying for the odd game, compared to the other 90% that you get to run in ultra wide amazeballs?

Gotta agree here, whilst it is quite annoying with Youtube videos and a few games it's a lot more immersive when games do work and fixes are coming thick and fast recently as 21:9 becomes more popular.

Talk about throwing the baby out with the bathwater lol! 21:9 needs some tinkering or perhaps a drop to 2560x1440 in SOME instances, but the benefits when it does work (which is most of the time) FAR FAR outweigh those small niggles. Crazy to get rid IMO, especially if you have a good panel. Looking at the possible alternatives, for example the XB271 or PG279Q, they have inferior panels with worse uniformity and QC, albeit faster speed. I personally went through x4 XB270's before I gave up, and now have the X34. It's not PERFECT, but I'm very happy, would never go back to 16:9 now.

@OP Going back to 16:9 wont change a thing for you. You will still have bezels to look at. The only reason to change back would be if you gained something you didnt have before such as perhaps 144hz? Only other reason i can see to change monitor is if you are plagued with heavy ips glow which would be clearly visible when running 16:9 content. Otherwise the change would be pointless.

fifa 16, there was a fix for a while, but no longer works . and starcraft 2 legacy of the void , some others games i have

i see a lot of people say run games in 1440 if they dont work, could you tell me how please , i thought the monitor could only run 2560x1080 ?

i also feel i am just annoyed that i should have to find 3rd party fixes , and i really cant be bothered with doing this any more

I think the OP has a point, is very clever and generous. I would be happy to assist by buying the ridiculous 21:9 monitor from them at a mate's rate.

Some people are randomly assuming that it's a 1440P panel.

So, OP would be running games at 1920x1080 for 16:9.

thanks, that is correct its not a 1440p panel, I am not sure how people assumed that. so yes its 1920x1080 on this panel for 16:9 i have to apply for some games, and it just looks not good . Thanks for the reply .

As said, for the games that don't support the 21.9 AR then just run them at the 16.9 equilvanet so:

3440x1440 - 2560x1440
2560x1080 - 1920x1080

You need to set the res. in game to this and then go mess with the monitor OSD "ratio" setting, I can't remember which setting you will need to set, just experiment yourself.

It will be the exact same experience in every way, the res. and size as what you would get on a 16.9 equivalent monitor except you will have black bars on the sides.

From my experience the majority of games work wonderfully with 21.9 and any that haven't have been easily fixed via manually tweaking files or flawless widescreens.

I have found the VAST majority of games run fine at ultrawide, some need HUD or cutscene tweaks / fixes, but almost everything works ok out of probably 50 games I have tried.

There is a fix for Fifa 16 but you have to apply it every time you launch the game. Works a charm though and the game is definitely easier when you can see more of the pitch!

I would never be able to go back to 16:9 after 21:9, it is like going back to 4:3 now.

Which 21:9 do you have and what resolution and size is it ?

I could understand if you were on a very small 21:9 screen but if you are on a 34" you really are wasting your time downgrading to a 16:9.

A lot of the games have a fix and if they don't you can normally use the monitors settings to make it full screen too and remove the black bars. Yes it will cut out some of the image but it removes the bars that seem to annoy you a lot. Also I don't find many games that cause a problem at all, from old to new games, in some cases I just edited the registry or CFG or INI file for the game and got it working myself. Also 16:9 content is easy to fix to full screen if you really want that with Media Player Classic - Home Cinema., movies that are native 21:9 (approx) are amazing on the screen I could never go back to the black letter-boxing again.

I can't wait till they make 21:9 OLED TV's that are large so can replace my Plasma TV 50" 16:9.
