Feeling a bit cheated by "Heat Loss Report"

... had an interesting conversation with double glazing firm yesterday - tell me(estimate) what the U is on my current windows versus the 1.4 you propose for new ones ..
we have no idea - lol what ?

Depending on what windows you have installed at the moment there may be a plate located on the side or underside of the openable part of the window that has the information. Another area may be if you look between the window panels it's sometimes etched there as well

I had already forensically studied them and found little than the pilkingtons emblem, but expected double-glazing folks, or someone doing a survey,
to be able to accurately measure pane width+gap and give me a U estimate.
FLIR's would be a nice diagnostic piece of equipment that would help, make some measures, but relatively expensive, although in the scope of £600 report maybe not so much.

Don't Octopus lend them out?
Only really to find out where you are losing heat, due to draughts and suchlike.

You do not need a thermal camera to do a heat loss calculation.

Back to the OP:
£600, yikes. For what you’ve had sounds like a half job at best. For a proper heat loss/pre installation survey I’d expect a person at my door properly measuring up, considering/discussing pipe runs, heat pump placement, noise assessment, planning checks and checking general suitably as a bare minimum.

I paid Octopus £500 for mine but it was fully refundable up to the day before the installation if I wanted to cancel.

The issue with paying upfront and being non refundable is they have you over a barrel. No other installer is going to rely on someone else’s heat loss either. The obvious issue is that they’d be liable for following it and it could be completely wrong. It’s a sunk cost.

However, all is not lost, you can check if the report is in the ball park by building your property on the heat punk website and effectively do your own survey.

That said, I’d have some serious concerns if they didn't even come to the property.
