The fencing between my property & my neighbours needs to be replaced as it is a good 20 years old & rotting in places. We are going to split the cost & my (elderly) neighbour got a friend of one of her sons who recently retired but worked doing gardening services etc to do a quote for it which I think is a bit high but I don't really know how much these things cost.

The work would be to remove what is in the pic below & supply & fit new stuff I believe in a pretty much like for like way (although I need to find out exactly what he is quoting for as I am not sure all of them need doing...if so it is 6x fence panels) . I already know his quote is not exactly for this as it includes removing a hedge at the front of the house which he hasn't split out but essentially he has quoted around £370 for materials, £400 labour & £50 for disposal of the materials. Does this sound right or does it seem a bit high factoring in the hedge?

Not sure on the rest but the labour charge,it is normally £100 a day, half a day (if that) to take down old fence, whole day to put up new fence, thats £200 for labour unless he is hanging it out for a week.

Just done a quick look on wickes for the panels and posts and it comes to roughly £250.

I would personally do it myself but if you are getting someone to do it then ask for prices and where he is getting them from.

My sister blokes dad does fences, his price is roughly £100/panel with everything inc in that but uses concrete posts, gravel boards and featheredge boards.

If you price up diy remember the waste disposal will be quite expensive, a skip is 100 quid or waste to a tip will be priced by the load if you do it yourself.

I got family rates for mine but worked out that buying all the equipment needed, materials and disposal on top of removing the old one, clearing out all the unwanted plants/weeds/ivy would take me ages - it took two blokes two full days to do it so x10 for me on own ;) would not be worth the difference in price - i do most things DIY if i can but glad i didnt bother with the fence!

Too steep, you could get feather edge for less materials cost. Goes up pretty quick once the uprights are in too.
As for waste, got a car? break the old panels down and take them to the tip yourself, that is surely free? (obviously it wouldn't be free for a trader)

Those prices seem utterly astronomical, he's adding a lot onto the materials.

Does your local tip charge the public for disposal?:eek:

TL;DR get your finger out and do it yourself ;)

We have had a lot of fencing done in the last year or two and that sounds steep to me. I would consider looking at fencing companies that have more than one man on the job. All timber feather edge is priced at £50 p/m with the company I have used to date, this includes removing old fencing and general obstructions, and disposal. For such a short run, I would certainly DIY though.

I don't know about Norwich, but that's certainly not how it's done everywhere else I've lived!

DIY waste is priced by car load at my local tip.

Starts at £25 for a car and goes up from there, trade considerably more.

They will take one 'item' (or sack) ie. one fence panel, one kitchen cabinet etc per week for free.

jesus, i thought they were difficult in tunbridge wells

Don't pay anything for using the council tip here? I normally take the work van as well when I'm carting DIY, furniture rubbish. Occasionally they'll ask if it's commercial, I just tell em I've borrowed the work van to cart it there and they leave me to it.

Depends on

A: What the concrete is like under that fence - some can take a lot of work to remove and replace. I've had 2'x2' hunks of concrete under a fence before which weighed a tonne and took forever to break up

and

B: What sort of fence he's putting up

Remember - pay peanuts, get monkeys.

Mine is similar, bag of DIY waste a week and house waste is defined by 'would you take it with you when you move' if you would you can dump as much as you want!

You can dump as much green/garden waste as you want - i guess you could get rid of all the fencing but could take you months - they have ANPR cameras!

All tips will be this way or move to it as they have huge targets to hit with waste to landfill and have to pay themselves to dispose some waste!

Yup same here in gateshead, I've been back and forwards to the tip 5/6 times in one day and not paid a penny, they charge per item if you have them come pick it up tho.
Are you sure it was a council waste disposal? lol

If it's that bad get yer ass to Aldi, theyre selling hobo bins again for ~£20
Just burn it all, not as quick or convenient but works tjust the same.
We cut down 2 holly trees easy 12-14' high and I just burned them.

And yeah price seems astonomical imho
