Just started playing the guitar after many years out and I'm thinking of buying a stratocaster.

I remember the Japanese models were pretty a good bang for your buck so to speak but I see they are making the reissues again in Japan.

Wondered what they are like compared to the old jap reissue strats?

or is there a better option in that kind or price band.

Cheers.

The problem is, last time I checked they didn't export the Japanese models, so getting a hold of one may be difficult.

Yes, they are non-export. I have the chance of one though.

From what I've read tonight the premium ones seem pretty fantastic value for money.

I have two non-export Strats. They're pretty easy to get, if you know where to look. I got both mine from http://www.fareastguitars.co.uk/, but he only sells used guitars these days.

I have the vintage premium '62 reissue (alder body, aged parts, texas special pickups, which he imported for me) and the basic '72 reissue (basswood body, US vintage pickups) which he had got in 2nd hand, even though it was spotless and still had the plastic on the pickguard. Click for a pic

They're awesome guitars for the money. Far better than their mexican equivalents. I've had the '62 for over 2 years now, and it's the guitar i keep on the stand, ready to be played. It sounds great - the texas specials are well worth the extra money - plays great, and looks great.

Personally I prefer Japanese instruments to the American ones. Obviously that's subjective, but they really are fantastic. :)

I have a 1976 Antoria Strat copy which set me back £100. Japanese built and it's still my first and only guitar. :)

One of my friends has an early 90's Japanese Fender Strat and that's also fantastic. Was ~£500 second hand and there was a more recent American Strat in the shop, and the two didn't even compare. The Japanese one was wwwwaaaayyyyyyy better.

In short, get one. :p
