Fergie losing faith in Saha (Daily Mail) said:
Louis Saha's future at Manchester United is in serious jeopardy after it emerged that Sir Alex Ferguson has finally grown tired of the striker's injury problems.

Saha missed Tuesday's victory against Sheffield United at Old Trafford with hamstring trouble and has only managed to start 25 games all season.

And it is understood that United manager Ferguson is increasingly irritated at Saha's failure to play through pain and has not ruled out selling him this summer if he gets a decent offer.

The situation came to a head this week when Saha trained at the weekend and appeared as though he may be fit for selection against Neil Warnock's team on Tuesday night.

But Ferguson was disappointed to hear Saha say on Monday that his hamstring was sore again and that he didn't feel he could play.

With United battling for honours on three fronts, the fixture schedule ahead of Ferguson's players is daunting and as such the Scot needs as many bodies available as possible.

Sources close to Saha last night suggested that the player may be fit for the second leg of the Champions League semi-final against Milan in 13 days, but not before.

Publically Ferguson has been supportive of French international Saha but privately he is now becoming unsure about whether he has the mental fortitude required to perform consistently at the very highest level of the game.

Asked about Saha's condition after Tuesday's game, Ferguson's reply was telling.

"As regards Saha, I just don't know," he said gruffly.

During his three years at United, Saha has only started 66 games, a poor return on the £12m United paid Fulham in January 2004. Wayne Rooney, for example, has started 125 games in a shorter space of time while Cristiano Ronaldo has been in the starting line-up on 145 occasions.

Saha has been troubled by knee problems on three occasions and has undergone surgery, but it has been the niggles and strains that have annoyed Ferguson this season.

Ferguson knows that he needs a reliable through-the-middle striker to act as a focal point of United's attack and given that Saha has failed to take his opportunity to become the long-term replacement for Ruud van Nistelrooy the manager will try to buy one and offload Saha in the summer.

Newcastle's Michael Owen figures on Ferguson's radar - despite the former Liverpool man's own injury troubles - and so do Dimitar Berbatov of Tottenham and Barcelona's Eidur Gudjohnsen.

Owen would understandably come to Old Trafford like a shot if United trigger the release clause in his contract and although it would harder to prise Berbatov from White Hart Lane, Gudjohnsen is available after a disappointing season in Spain.

The Icelandic international plays a much deeper role than a traditional striker but Ferguson knows that he needs more depth in his squad and is keen to add another player with an imagination to match that of Rooney and Paul Scholes.

Ferguson is a long-standing admirer of the 28-year-old and enquired about him before he left Chelsea for the Nou Camp at the end of last season.

Gudjohnsen was an unused substitute as Barcelona beat Mallorca with a late goal on Sunday and would relish a return to the Premiership.

Ferguson has already spoken to United chief executive David Gill about his plans for the summer and has been told that there is money to spend.

Ferguson said: "I would hope to add a couple of players in the summer who will improve us.

"We're talking about that now. There won't be sweeping changes, maybe just one or two coming in who would have the talent to make a difference.

"One of the benefits we get from playing our style of football, such as in the Roma match last week, is that it makes it easier to persuade top players to come here. They see what we do and they like it.

"That's the kind of football they want to play."

Sporting Life said:
Rooney is hitting the goal trail at just the right time and with Alan Smith producing another spirited performance, the absence of Louis Saha is not being noticed too much.

The Frenchman has not featured since the away win at Liverpool at the beginning of last month, and it is becoming apparent his continued absence with a hamstring strain is not going down well with his manager.

In much the same way as a seemingly flippant remark over a Ruud van Nistelrooy penalty miss last season effectively signalled the end of the Dutchman's Old Trafford career, so there seemed to be hidden meaning behind Ferguson's response to when Saha will be back.

"Louis," he said puffing his cheeks out, "I just don't know."

Well all I can say is finally, finally Ferguson sees the frustration at having such an injury prone player. I don't deny that on top form Saha is a very good player, but he's not a player if he can't play. And more often than not, he cannot go 6 months without an injury that rules him out for months at a time. If an offer comes in, I reckon Ferguson will accept it. I also think the determination of Smith to overcome his injuries has shown Saha in a bad light, a light he has put himself in and Ferguson wants more players who will fight like Smith.

How much would you get though? He isn't a young gun anymore and other clubs will know of his injury problems.

Probably isn't worth selling and just keep him as a squad player, he does get you goals when hes playing.

I'd say around £6million would probably be around his value now. He's 28 right now so still has about 5 years if he looks after himself. Ferguson won't keep him as a squad player as he'll still be getting injuries and not be available for selection.

Manchester Evening News (on Saha) said:
'LOUIS Saha is one match away from making a century of appearances for United, but the odds are lengthening on the French striker ever reaching that milestone.

Sir Alex Ferguson must now be seriously considering more than one transfer swoop in the summer to strengthen his attack as Saha's unreliable appearance record begins to hack off the Reds boss.

Fergie has tracked hitmen such as Atletico Madrid's Fernando Torres and Klaas Jan Huntelaar at Ajax, and he has also been linked with Michael Owen at Newcastle.

He has £18m earmarked for midfielder Owen Hargreaves from Bayern Munich and a probable £8m on its way to Southampton for teenage Welsh full-back Gareth Bale.

One striker was set to be the target for chief executive David Gill to pursue in the close season, but Saha's injury situation is set to force the Reds to dig even deeper into the Glazers' pockets to fund a double swoop.

Ferguson's patience with Saha during an injury curse which has blighted the 28-year-old's time at Old Trafford has been commendable.

The United manager's tolerance looked to have paid off this season as Saha hit the ground running following the summer sale of Ruud van Nistelrooy, knocking in 11 goals by early December.

Those strikes added up to a 2006 calendar year haul of 23. His injury nightmare appeared to be history.

It prompted United to extend the Parisian's contract before Christmas to keep him at the club until 2010.

But since the deal was signed, Saha's appearance graph has plummeted alarmingly again.

He has made just four starts in 2007 and seven appearances as a sub, scoring once.

It has left United short up front, and Fergie had to swoop in the January transfer window to bring Henrik Larsson on loan from Helsingborg to cover the crisis.

The Swede has come and gone, but Saha is still a regular in the treatment room as a hamstring problem he picked up in March continues to keep him off Fergie's list of players available for selection.

Now it seems that the admirable patience of the United boss has worn thin - if it hasn't snapped altogether - with the player dubbed `Balsa Man' by one United fanzine because of his flimsy resistance.

When Fergie was asked after Tuesday night's match against Sheffield United when Saha would be fit, the manager's exasperated and resigned "I don't know" response said it all.

And that makes the long term for Saha look bleak.

It looked as if Fergie had reconciled himself to the fact that Saha's fitness is a mystery and that he won't be banking on being able to use the Frenchman for United's run-in.

Saha has been riddled with fitness problems since his £12.8m move from Fulham in January 2004.

Those problems, which included a 12-month battle with knee troubles, have seen him appear in only 53 per cent of the Reds matches since moving from Craven Cottage.

He is stuck on that 99-appearance mark after three-and-a-half years at the club.

Compare that to Wayne Rooney, who clocked up his century in two years.

It's a depressing figure for Saha, and a frustrating one for player and club, as his Fulham appearance record never suggested that United were gambling when they shelled out for him.

Fergie has stuck by injury-stricken players in the past, notably Roy Keane and Ole Solskjaer, allowing them time to return. But theirs were serious problems that needed patience.

The nature of Saha's persistent niggles and apparent extended time out for run-of-the-mill injuries suggests that he can now no longer rely on the manager's tolerance.

It is a sad state of affairs for a likeable player, who on his day is a quality goalscorer at any level. Unfortunately, those days have been overwhelmed by weeks spent in the medical room.

Whether Louis Saha will get a chance to prove he can overcome the blight and last the distance is becoming increasingly uncertain.

The man who helped put the Reds in the driving seat in the Premiership back in autumn and early winter must now be wondering if he will be off-loaded when United's destination is reached this campaign.'

I have to say, Rooney's goal tally of 21 goals in all competitions this season is pretty good considering his overall form. Maybe we can expect a Ronaldo-esque transformation next season to a more consistent performer and with that will come more goals.

According to wiki he is on 20 goals and 14 assists this season ( obviously before the Sheffield Utd game) and not to mention how much he does for the team in general I think its a cracking season for someone who has been played out of position on numerous occasions (out on the left) especially with the much publicised drop in form . This figure is also with less appearances than last season (by one game)

I know where you are coming from (and it would be good to see him scoring even more) but his workrate is so phenomenal and link up play is where he earns his keep even without a goal or assist from him

He does seem to score in bursts and then have dry spells - as you said hopefully from next season he will go on longer runs of scoring (and less games inbetween when he doesnt)

Ah you're right, maybe I foreseen his 21st goal tomorrow. ;)

My main point was that even in a decidedly average season were people expect more of him, it's not half bad and makes you think of what he can achieve on full form with a more mature and precise gameplay.

LOUIS SAHA will be offered as bait as Alex Ferguson steps up his bid to land Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov.

But White Hart Lane boss Martin Jol will fiercely resist offers for the Bulgarian who has hit 20 goals in his debut Premiership season.

But just as was the case with Michael Carrick – who was also a Spurs "untouchable"-Berbatov looks certain to move to Old Trafford in the summer.

The hitman, 26, revealed United made an "unconvincing" move to sign him prior to his £10.9million Spurs switch.

But this time the bidding could even go as high as £16m as Fergie looks to beef up a strike-force which most believe is one quality striker short.

Saha, 28, is valued at £6m and a United source revealed: "Berbatov is the one Fergie wants and he'd be ready to let Louis go.

"Pairing Wayne Rooney with Dimitar would be incredible and the money is there — as well as for Owen Hargreaves' Bayern Munich switch."

I posted that on the 19th! ;)

I really do hope it happens.

Me too. If he doesn't play tomorrow or isn't even on the bench, Ferguson is definitely selling him. He hasn't made himself available and seems to be saving himself for the bigger games, tomorrow's teamsheet should reveal his future. Because we all know for a fact that once Ferguson has a player in his bad books, he's on his way out of Old Trafford.

Fergie on Saha, taken from another forum and I can't find proof of this anywhere but anywho...:

Think its well and truly the end of the road for Saha. Surely means a striker will be a definate this summer.

I seen an interview with Shreeves and it ended with Ferguson smiling and saying how lovely a day it was, and he only talked about Ronaldo. Unless I seen a different interview today.

Yeah, I said last week that if he wasn't on the bench for the first AC Milan game that he wouldn't play again for us this season. The physios and other staff have said that he is fit enough to play, but he's bottling it. He just doesn't want to step up and continue on the good work he put in at the start of the season, one thing is for sure, that his head just isn't in it anymore. I always considered him a confidence striker, he goes through spells of low morale and confidence for no reason, but he's burning down massive bridges with Ferguson and the team that can never be restored.

That was absolute rubbish though. Andy Cole on form and confident was one of the most clinical finishers in Premiership history. I would take a 24 year old Andy Cole over almost any top striker in the world now.

I wouldn't, he was a good player, but he was different when he joined us, it took him a while to get around to the idea of playing for the team. I don't think I'll forget his 'take 10 shots, score 1 of them' style of play.

NokkonWud said:
Except the way Carrick is playing now you would have to say his value is circa-£12m.

You think Carrick's value has dropped?

NokkonWud said:
We haven't paid more than £12m... yet.
£12m upfront then the rest based on winning the league isn't it?

I think it was closer to £14million but I'm not totally sure on that one. But I think he's been terrific for us this season, maybe up until recently, an unsung hero.

hmm well either scholes and carrick arent the superlative midfielders you believe or we are playing the wrong tactics - because when we played midweek we got battered through the center.

carrick is quite neat in his play. but does neatness win you games? when scholes is gone would you be confident in relying upon carrick to create all the chances if paired with a defensive partner - ala Hardcheese?

I can count on one hand the number of games we have been outplayed and that is one of them. I guess you've overlooked the other 50 odd games we've played this season?

Nickg said:
i guess so - but if you want to win the big competitions you have to beat the big teams in the big games. its okay beating watford or whoever x number of times, but can you tell me how many times we have beaten chelsea, arsenal, or milan over the last couple of years?

we are a team @ 90% to get that additional 10% you have to move heaven and earth to get the right players and tactics to make it work.

milan surely showed that a good defensive mid + a good attacking mid both through the middle can make the difference. we know this not to be a freak occurance because scholes/keane were similar - albeit scholes isnt quite the fleet feeter - unlike kaka.

so if scholes isnt as effective as kaka, and Carrick isnt as effective as scholes...well you can see where im going with this.

edit okay we beat milan @ OT but only after their center mid was taken off @ half time.

More than anything, that match showed how tired the players were. Injuries finally caught up with us, not being able to rest anyone and having them play x amount of games in a row didn't help. As of that match, the players had not completed any proper training for 3 weeks as Fergie wanted to keep the energy levels up. From the first whistle, Milan ran at us non stop, exploited our shaky defence. Our midfield had Ronaldo, Giggs and Scholes all on yellow cards, and if I had to pick out one particular player that it affected, it would be Scholes. We never do things the easy way. We have no agressive central midfielder like Gattuso to dictate or lead the team. Everything went wrong at the Milan game.

Nickg said:
so what happened at chelsea and arsenal and milan last time? we cant keep doing the same thing year after year and then claiming it was a once off because our players were tired...how many years does it take to address this problem? 5? 10? 20?!

I think it may have been a different story with our full first team available. I'm not taking anything away from Milan's win because they deserved it. They were able to rest key players, very much the same way Liverpool have. Both lying in 4th position in their leagues, nothing else to play for. Along with Chelsea, we were firing on more than one front and something was eventually going to give with the injuries we had.

My main gripe is that we have no leader in the team.

And is it not possible that we were just beaten by the better team on the night, they got their team selection and tactics spot on, while we didn't?

Nickg said:
yep - we were beaten by a better team. but they havent spent silly money lately - unlike Inter, Real and Chelsea. im wondering how do we prgress to become a better team than Milan in the eventuality of us losing Scholes, giggs et al? we had our first choice midfield playing and they simply could not stop, nor come close to marking kaka.

we have no leader figure, no bite in the midfield, no set formation and are seemingly content with this?

the truth is that we have been in this situation for the last 5 years or so. nothing has changed in that time.

We progress to become a better team as our players mature and with additional signings every summer. Rooney and Ronaldo are still very young, and are improving every season. Fergie needs to get Giggs' replacement this summer and definitely get another central midfielder. He has to give youth a chance and the signs are that he will next season, with the return of Foster, Pique, Bardsley, Evans and possibly Rossi. Milan probably have the most experienced team in Europe, I'm not disappointed to be knocked out of the CL by them as I think they'll go on and win it now.

I cannot complain about winning the Premiership with the team we have. I have no reason to nitpick as Fergie and the players have proved not only me but countless others and the media wrong. I'll be looking to this summer to see our expectations of next season.

The only player I can safely say will score profusely in any league in Europe is RVN. Personally I'd go for Berbatov. But I don't see him going anywhere.
