Which route an which company? Stena emailed me with an offer for a free upgrade to premium when buying an economy ticket on the Holyhead-Dublin route.

I travel all the time with Irish Ferries on the same route and it never gets any cheaper than about £180. If going on the Swift (90 min crossing) it's usually about £40 more on top.

I'm not sure if the Stena upgrade applies on the Belfast-Stranraer route but I can check when I get home.

Norfolk line: Birkenhead -> Belfast has seemed to be the cheapest when we've done crossings in the past.

Long crossing - 8 hours - but you get a free 3 course meal with your ticket. If you go for a night crossing a cabin is included in the price - hence the price hike.

It's not worth it to save a few quid. It is the most soul destroying crossing ever. The boat is crap. Entertainment is a cinema which never works and 3 poker machines. That's it.

Hehe main reasons we go on it - no kiddies and more time to sleep, it also cuts out a massive chunk of my parents Reading to Donegal trip.

We used to do Stranrar/Carnryan to Larne/Belfast, but the drive was horrible all the way up the M6

OP hasn't said where he's travelling to/from - but hell it's another option :)
