Yep, go into system prefs and look under mouse and keyboard settings

Highlight something with Command/Apple + I, and look for the open with dialogue

If you press command and right click you get the option "always open with"

gumbald, you need rcdefaultapp - the prefs panel that apple forgot will solve all your probs

I'm on the lookout for freeware FTP client and freeware text editor (with syntax highlighting)... Can anybody point me to either, or a site that lists freeware Mac software like this?

FileZilla or Cyberduck for ftp.

I use BBedit and Transmit. Both worth the money

Cyberduck looks nice. And I've tracked down Komodo for editing. Seemed big at 36mb, but seems to do the trick

Filezilla seemed very buggy.

Textmate + Cyberduck = Win.

(I'm too stingy to buy Transmit atm)

For 2, Apple+G in finder, whack in "smb://<computer name/IP>" select the share, maybe enter password, if so, save it in your keyring thingy.

(I'm going to assume you knew that anyway to prevent me from looking silly. )

Even having to enter passwords for shares that you can access with guest status between Windows machines? My housemates would be reluctant to put their passwords in my machine

There is a way to do FTP, but not directly in the Finder per se..

That's the method I meant, but the tip on the Apple site is bogus

You can't and have never been able to write (upload) to a FTP server.
