Hi all

went out again today with the tokina 100mm and the cheap extension tubes + the dodgy home made difuser, which is a great talking point with other togs :)

I was a bit dissapointed with the sharpness of my first set which i put down to the extension tubes and the fact the lens was stuck at f32. With kenko tubes you can adjust the aperture in camera like normal, this is not possible with the cheap tubes, untill i discovered the tokina has a manual aperture ring  so i set this between 11 and 16 and had another go.
let me know what you think, i think there a lot sharper???

unfortunately its mostly flys again, but i found my first sheild bug, i think its to early yet for a lot of the common bugs, but i did come across a few dragon flys, but couldn't get close enough too get a picture.

any ways C+C welcome.

Think I'm going to have to get some extension tubes, they look like they could be good fun - we get loads of insects around our garden in the summer.
Great job on the pics :)

a quick Q for all you macro shooters, when you get close in shots like this, is it taken as i see it here or is a cropped image? therefore getting in closer
cheers

great shots by the way

It varies, depending on what I'm shooting. Most will have a slight crop to improve the framing and then scaled down whereas others are a lot harder to get that close when taking the photo.

i.e.

was taken about 2 inches away and is the full frame whereas:

was taken about a foot away and fairly heavily cropped due to it being so hard to get close.

Ditto, ladybird is a top class shot, I've been experimenting with a ebay reversing ring but not got anything as impressive as these! Will have to get some tubes...

Nice shots those. I'm revising for my 3rd year exams at the moment, and that just makes me want to get out with my extension tubes :(. To make it worse, I even found one of these in the road today and went and put him/her in a bush. Wish I'd had the time to get some shots :(

cheers for all the comments guys, i really feel like i've finaly found a photography style i can get into and really enjoy. not just taking pictures of insects but finding them is pretty fun to.
cant wait to get some new kit.

Decided I AM going to get some Macro tubes now... lol.
So half decent macro tubes should be able to control the aperture of the lens which is handy - otherwise I'll get an adaptor to use some old Pentax lenses I have in the house.
Are any of the lenses in my signature going to be ok for this with the macro tubes - I'm worried the 70-200 might be a bit unwieldy.

maybe reversing the sigma 30mm would be a good start. i think the 70-200 would be to much weight to use with 3 stacked tubes, you could carefully give it a go, tho i wouldn't :)

other than that the 30mm again with 3 tubes would give good results, tho your working distance will be small.
