Few MOT questions

Hi guys,

A certain member of this forum is buying my 214 and has asked me to put 12 months MOT on it before he picks it up.

My car has clear side repeaters with clear bulbs. The bulbs glow a yellowy colour instead of orange. Is this a failure?

The car was involved in a slow speed rear end shunt last year. This has caused the tailgate to become slightly misaligned from the body. It opens and closes fine and there's nothing sticking out etc... is this a failure? I never had the damage repaired (not much at all, no body panels are bent or anything, just the tailgate is misaligned).

What other things do they check? I have no clunks from the suspension, the driveshaft gaiters are in good condition and there are no leaks from anything.

Cheers :)

Mainly like all lights, breaks, seatbelts and normal things. a lot of tyre problems fail MOT's aswell.

Bodywork will be fine as long as nothing is hanging off and could cause danger to other road users or pedestrians.

Lights...well, its a gamble, if they confidently flash yellow in day light they might get overlooked, but take a spare pair of orange bulbs with you just in case...even better, buy a pair of Philips Silver Vision bulbs. They are silver but flash a road legal orange. w00t!

Thanks for the quick reply :)

Ok, that's cool. It's just had new pads and discs, all 4 tyres are good, the spare is a little low on tread... probably just on the limit.

So the indicators shouldn't be a problem as long as they work?

edit... Just seen the above post. I bought some orange bulbs a while ago so will take those with me and swap them if there's a problem.

Here's to it passing :)

Ahh cool, that's great :)

I'll see what the spare is like in the GSi. If it's a good'un I'll stick that in for the test.

Now I just need to book it in.

If I phone up on Monday, will I be able to get a slot a few days after, or is there normally a big waiting list?

You dont need a spare just take it out, the chance of getting a puncture from yours to the MOT station will be small.

Depends how busy they are :p My garage did it next day for me, but I know others you have to book it in about a week ahead.

Even if the spare tyre is present and is below limit they won't fail you, they dont test it, you dont even need to have a spare tyre to pass an MOT.

If the spare is in the car and its below the legal limit you will fail, you don't need a spare its not an MOT requirement but if its in the car it has to be legal.

Just like the rear wash wipe, cars arn't required to have one by law but if its fitted it has to work.

A bald spare is only an advisory, I never checked the spare on my car when I bought it and put it through the MOT 9 months later with a spare that was bald. It only got an advisory on the MOT.

Its stupid really because the second you get a puncture and fit the spare your car isn't road legal :o

Email me your address and ill pop 2 orange bulbs in the post for you Andy.

I already have some bulbs to go in if they don't like the clears mate :)

Or do you mean clear bulbs that flash orange?

Oh right not to worry then, nah I just got a load of bulbs. Every time I go to the scrappy I get bulbs and fuses and they usually let me have them free if I'm buying something else!

Heh, cool. Maybe I should start doing that... especially as how they charged me £15 for a piece of plastic the other week

Cheers for the offer though.
