There is no way you can run a CSS server off a home connection. I have done it with me and someone else and it wasvery bad. But you can setup a mail server or use it as a media pc to stream MP3's and Videos. Or use it to download on a night and leave it on 24/7. I have a spare decent PC, and I dont use it no point running two pcs when you can do everything on the pc you use now. I use gmail for mail so it does not bother me about a mail server plus I have web hosting so I can use a mail server on there .
I'm saying it's about more than just having the upload bandwidth. Consumer internet connections simply aren't cut out for hosting something as ping dependent as CSS. You might be able to get away with something for you and a few mates to mess about on, but if you're serious about running a decent server forget about hosting it yourself and rent one instead.
You can use your own domain instead of gmail.com or hotmail.co.uk. I have a few domains my self 3 infact I have still to setup my email adress on my webhosting. Plus your only limited by the space of your servers hard drive. So yes it can benifit you depending if you use your email much.
You could use it to run a small server of 4-6 people or just sell the parts and use the funds to rent a game server for 12 months @ approx £120 for 12 players.
