looking at getting what just a few question regarding them

1. are they plug and play just like sata HDD
2 do they need firmware updates or anything like that
3. how much performance increase will i see over my 7200rpm sata HDD
4.i have about 80gb of games shall i get 2 one for OS and one for Games
5. can you recommend a good one

many thanks in advance

I have the OCZ vertex 120gb

1. yes it was plug and play
2. some do some dont, mine didnt
3. windows loading and useable in around 15 seconds performance enough for you?
4. you can go either way, 2 smaller ones for games and OS or one larger one, I went one larger one, but you could partition if you want to keep them seperate
5. highly recommend mine :D

So basically the cpu and mobo thinks it's a sata HDD

yeah basically, I just plugged it in and away I went same as with any mechanical HDD, windows asks where you want to install OS and you choose the SSD.

i went from a raid0 array with 2 f3's and noticed a very nice speed increase. I reccomend the intel x25-m 160gb.

I have a OCZ Vertex Turbo and it is awesome.

In terms of FW I upgraded to FW1.5 which gave full Trim support in Windows 7 so I can't foresee doing any further FW upgrades in the future, and as people say just straight plug in.

Win 7 loads in about 20 secs or there abouts (and thats with a lot of peripherals plugged in)

I assume I could just image copy my c: drive to the SSD and be up and running without a re install ?

Depends. If the drives aren't the same size that will often cause problems. You would need to check with the drive manufacturer.

with normal HDDs as long as the new drive is larger than the partition size it is coming from then you are ok

I cant see why imagine with Acronis or similiar wouldnt work.

If memory recalls Kingston were selling a kit with the SSD, 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor to mount the drive and a copy of some imaging software for the transition.

I know OCZ warned people that if you had a 64gb image and put it onto a 120gb drive it would effectively partition it rather than dropping the 64gb onto the 120gb drive itself and leaving it as 1 drive.

I tried cloning my previous OS with Acronis when I got my SSD's, but it ended up using the incorrect alignment which made performance really suffer.

The best way to use Acronis is to use the backup method instead of cloning, and make sure you choose a full backup, and select the option "sector-by-sector".

Absolutely, acronis will just resize the partition if you ask it to.

As Davy said, I find backup > restore works beter than the cloning option.
