Few x1800-xt questions

Hi Guys,

Im considering nipping to OCuk on Tuesday to pick up that x1800 XT they currently have on offer.. i currently have a vanilla x800 256MB so i think it should be quite a boost.

I like my systems to be fairly quiet though. On idle this x800 is very quiet, its one of the reasons i bought it. I understand these x1800's are VERY loud, but is that just under load? I can handle them being loud when im playing a game but is it going to whine away whilst im just sat in windows?

My current card drops down to around 18db when not being pushed, does anyone have any figurs for the noise produced by the x1800's?

Only ever hear my X1800XT at boot up when the fan is tested for a couple of seconds, and then maybe if playing an intense game the fan comes on half speed. I don't know who said the fan is loud in the first place because i find mine virtually silent most of the time, and when playing games i have my speakers on anyway so any noise there is never gets heard.

Its far from silent, preety loud in games but not too bad in idle, but I can still hear it at idle its probably the loduest fan in my case, thats not saying much however as i have some decent stuff in here.

i dont think its any louder than my arctic cooler on my X800. playing CS:S i can hardly hear it. certainly loads quieter than stock X800 heatsink!

ah thats good to hear I would say my current card is around arctic cooler levels, very audible when playing a game, but as has been said, it doesnt really matter as the game is making noise.

As long as its not intrusive at idle im quite happy with that.. I have a zalman 7000 cooler and akasa paxpower 420W PSU in there so its a pretty quiet all in all (got my maxtor in a silentMAXX enclosure.) I dont mind a bit mroe noise for nearly double the performance, its just all reviews say "fan is VERY loud" i presume they mean under load then.

Yeah idle should be fine, you could always get a zalman cooler.
