Few X2 4400+ (939) teething problems

weird flickeringness

I had some weirdness with my x2-4400 RIG as well a few weeks ago, strange hanging, graphics glitches etc etc. I systematically replaced every component with known working ones, with the exception of the mobo and the cpu.

After each swopout I booted machine and let it run for 1 hour. Problem remained all the time. Eventually I swopped out the PSU for one destined for a new machine, and presto all problems solved.

I have returned all the original bits to the machine, but kept the new power supply and to date (a little over 6 weeks now) not a single glitch.

It might not be your problem, but PSU's are quite cheap and it may just be worth a try. I'm not that up with PSU's and all the 12v rails etc etc, but the new PSU is a 470W Thermaltake Value and it came with all the required bits and pieces as well - SATA power / PCI-e power 20/24pin split connector etc.

Reinstalling the OS didn't help, but I think I've found a solution. It hasn't crashed for several days now since I switched power saving from 'minimal power management' to 'always on'. What's odd about that is you would think then it was Cool'n'Quiet that was causing the crashing, but it was even crashing with C'n'Q turned off in the BIOS.

I dunno if 'minimal power management' was doing something else power related, but nevertheless switching to 'always on' seems to have done the trick.

Only problem is 'always on' means the PC is eating more juice when idle but it's better than having it crashing. I might invest some more time into trying to get it stable with C'n'Q in the future.

Just want to say thanks for all the help

I don't think it is sorted actually, I've had a couple more lockups in SupCom (not game crashes, rather the system just freezing, early in games too) and two in Flight Sim X as well (same thing). This is with power management on Always On so Cool'n'Quiet is out of the equation.

Couldn't put that beta bios on since awdflash insists it's not for my board (bizarrely the motherboard identifier on my current bios is actually wrong, it says I have an A8N-SLI not A8N5X so the bios won't load, even though the current bios itself and the new one I want to load are defeinitely for A8N5X). The bios shouldn't be relevant anyway, my board has supported the 4400+ Toledo since launch about 6 bios revisions ago. So I'm pretty much out of options.

I will try another PSU later just in case it's that, but at this point I may just sell the 4400+ and buy a new Intel core 2 setup. I can't have a PC that freezes this much.

Really wasn't expecting this amount of problems just from swapping a CPU...
