FF downloads

Is it possiable to resume a download when using FF after you stud your pc down after say half way through?

Unlikely, it'll have lost where it was by then. Built in download functions in browsers aren't the best.

Big download?

Well not massive 700M, just getting a rubbish download speed.

As gumbald says browsers aren't too hot on resumable downloads natively. You'd need a download manager for this kind of thing.

Firefox up to and including version 2 can't resume downloads cross-session. If you closed Fx, the download was cancelled.

I find the in session resume pitiful too. Big downloads I try to find as a torrent such as Linux images.

I think the nightlies can do it - the patch definitely didn't make Alpha 8. See here and #230870.

anything bigger than a few hundred mb, i always use a download manager.

What does a download manger allow you to do? Not used one before.

LOL I was joking. Something that bledd said earlier in the backing up Firefox thread.

So from what you know of FF3 will it rival Opera 9.23 or Opera Kestrel? I'm fed up with FF2 so I'm on Opera now. The Kestrel alpha to be exact. I'm loving it. I'm wondering if FF3 will have anything to tempt me back.

dTa is very good, both for downloading and resuming files, and for getting better download speeds.

Hard to say till it's released. There's a mile of UI and performance refinement still to go.
Kestrel's JS performance beats Firefox though (not that I think it makes too much odds as long as IE's worse still), and that isn't really going to change till Moz2.

True. I was just wondering if MoFo had "announced" anything in FF3 that would beat Opera. I'm not convinced it will. Is Moz2 the future rendering engine for FF then?

Hope you don't mind me picking your brain. I'm genuinely interested and you know loads about this.
