FF XII

Do I need to have played the older ones to enjoy this or understand it?

If its like any of the other Final Fantasies, you'll be fine going in at any one of the series since they all take place in different worlds. Exception is FFX-2.

does this one still have the random battles ? This is the one thing that i used to hate with the older games, but im sure i read somewhere that they had dropped this for the new game.

afaik FF12 monster system is like the usual MMORPG's system, monsters will appear on the main screen and once they been killed you can leave the area and they will respawn, so there isnt any random battles.

This is true you can see all the monsters, while walking around, also they respawn while you're in that area so if you just wanna level for a bit you don't have to keep entering and exiting an area.

At the moment I'm really enjoying the game, must say it's got some really nice changes to the way the game is played.

Can't wait for this game. I'm a big FF fan! does anyone know if it will make its stated release date of around end of april?

It isnt, it needs translating into english, which means getting new voice actors for all the characters. Thats not going to happen in 2 months.

I miss all-text RPGs tbh. Too many kids nowadays hate reading. I've seen kids playing games, and they won't even read a short sentence on screen that says something like 'crouch here to get past the fallen beam'. Instead they'll spend 10 minutes button mashing to get past it through shear luck.

All-text also has the advantage that you imagine what they sound like, and that is something you lose with real voices.

But the disadvantage is you don't know what they really sound like :p
I actually find myself reading the subtitles more than watching whats actually going on when there are voice overs. My eye is automatically drawn to the text so I've read it before they've even said it.

The problem with text is that they put too much of it and you end up mashing the buttons to get though it all, ff7 is a good example, problem with audio is that the chars sometimes talk to slow, oblivion for example, and your waiting ages to hear the important part.

It's difficult when they translate from Jap to Eng, as they dont normally change much if any of the lip syncing, which is why sometimes sentances seem to last longer than they need just to stay with the lip syncing :p or so I found, playing FFX Jap version and the Eng version I found the speech to be slower paced in the Eng version.
