True, but if you cannot even view the threads without paying, you have to stump up the cash just to have a look if there is anything you need. Think of it this way, you need a part for the car, you are not sure if your local motor factor stocks the part, or even if they can get it, so you go in, have a mooch around and ask the guy at the till if they have what you need. They do, great, you pay and leave, they don't, that's OK, you look elsewhere. But if you had to pay £20 just to be let through the door, you'd go elsewhere straight away, it's not worth the risk.
We've had this discussion on the Club triumph web site a few times and it is felt that if people could only access the site once they had paid their CT membership, we would lose out on those who have no intention of joining an owners club (it's not everyones scene), or who are already in another club and can't afford to join both. That way the only input into the forum would be from those in the club and the amount of use would decline, and, as such, the amount of useful info would likewise suffer. Once that happens visitors become few and far between and the whole forum collapses in upon itself.
It is also considered good advertising for the club itself. When people can see threads about club meetings, club events (RBRR, 10CR, etc.), club specific rewards (insurance, money off at garages, or whatever) they become interested in the additions the club has to offer and pay up for full membership.
I haven't joined some clubs simply because I cannot see what I'll be getting for my money due to the lack of information on not only the club benefits, but also the type of people who are members of that club. You don't want to stump up cash to join a club only to find out they are all a bunch of nobs.
