FFS! It's BOUGHT!

Sir, I fully agree with the general thrust of your post, you have in essence pinpointed the most apt target of my ire and at this moment in time I do not believe I possess the necessary elegance of prose nor the literary wit to further advance the point.
I would at most only be able to offer an incremental exposition of the issue which would surely do nothing other than sully your original presentation with my most unworthy agreement.
Forthwith I acknowledge your most erudite precedent as being the most pre-eminent advice on the subject and will trouble this thread no further with my thoughts on the matter.

+1

Thank you Sir Humphrey. :)

Why do people seem to be unable to grasp YOUR and YOU'RE?

Finally THEIR, THERE and THEY'RE

Rant over :p

It annoys me when people mix up their and there but I misuse your and you're quite a bit (was never taught that one at school).

While there may be some people who didn't pay attention at school or are just too lazy to properly use the language - shockingly a lot of it is due to people not being properly taught basic grammar at school - especially those currently in the approx 28-35 age range who would have been caught up in the Conservatives meddling with the curriculum and then Labour resetting it when they got into power shortly afterwards - which years certain parts of the English syllabus was taught got switched around several times with some people (myself included) missing some of the basics entirely.

I'm in that age range and went to 3 primary schools across the country (family moved twice growing up due to my dad running businesses) and at each one I do recall being taught the differences between them all.

The reason it stuck in mind was because at Queens County Primary (now closed down!) in Stoke the teachers and headmaster were feared and you made damn well sure to listen to them.

In that school we were taught mathematics with an abacus as well!

Unless a school is truly poor then I can't see how any English department can have teachers that don't teach basic English grammar/spelling.

Such erudite waffle....

AAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHH

FFS PEOPLE!

I don't know why it bothers me this much, I forgive most other grammar crimes but this one for me is unforgivable.

When you buy something you have BOUGHT it, not brought it.

Look at the word, there's no R in it.

Anyone that writes it with an R should be instantly banned from life.

Ah! not just me then

Andi.

You're = you are. That's all you need to know.

Hilarious thread, which I strongly agree with. It's unacceptable to be **** at your native language.

So funny. ;D

You're = you are. That's true.

I haven't read though all of this thread but it seems like I missed a blast.

Yes. It's healthy when you can get cheesed off at the same time laugh about it. That and the fact it's so bloody annoying to read.

The best part is, this discussion will always come up on this forum or the next.

I just cannot accept that we don't all have the exact same capacity for learning / retaining knowledge gained from our illustrious schools of grammar. It's quite despicable.
Perhaps some of these smelly chav-grammar using oiks should have brought a better education.
Mustard gas the bally lot of them I say!

Well I've always assumed it was a country wide story - there was a big bust up over it when I got to secondary school when they realised that in the whole year (~120 pupils), drawn over 4-5 primary schools, very few pupils had covered what they should have been taught in English upto that point, some of the teachers tried to cover the basics but mine was of the opinion she shouldn't have to make up for the mistakes of others and we'd have to pick it up as best we could.

Similiar story with my sisters year the one below me.

I can just about forgive someone for typing it (assuming it's a mistake) but people who say it just sound stupid.

I actually had someone proof-read something I wrote the other week and they tried to 'correct' bought to brought.

Everyone stop getting their jim jams in a flap over grammar lol :D

However I do agree, we should stamp out this idiocy,

Could we have a grammar Don? One that replaces poor grammar and spelling with correct spelling and grammar in a different font.

People that fail to use the correct words.

I see a lot of "there" when they mean "their", and looking at the usernames, it's usually the posters that I'd class as intelligent.

There's simply no excuse for using the wrong words. It's basic English. The excuse that "it's a forum.. What does it matter?", is also flawed. If you're taking the time to write something out, use the correct words!
