Hi Guys, im not really in Motors much and couldn't see a previous post on this.

My girlfriend has been having some problems with her 03 Punto key recently its like its not quite right for the lock (perhaps bent on slightly worn) Fiat want 130squid to cut a new key and tune the chip for her imobiliser,

Is it possible to get a standard fiat key cut and use that whilst holding the other near to the ignition?

The reason I say that is I used to work for a logistics company and we did the same with a truck when the key was snapped. is this a far shot or an idea?

Edit: I forgot to say Arnold Clark only supplied the one

if i remember rightly, the punto have blue and red keys

You need a red key to create a replacement blue key. Not sure if the 03 model punto has this though, what colour are your keys ?

The only key that was supplied was a blue key, which im under the impression is a remake from the red.

I know she has a key code card thats to do with the chip code.

The Punto keys are known for getting slightly bent, it makes putting them in and out a little bit harder although mine was clearly wonkey it never caused me enough hassel to get it re-done.

No idea about prices but there is no 'red' key. We brought our Mk2 Punto from new and were given 2 standard 'blue' keys, you will need atleast one of these to get a new car and key cutting companies or local garages may be able to undercut a Fiat dealer. Key will need to be programed.

Although I have heard of someone getting a new key cut and keeping the old one (which has snapped) on the key ring, when he put the new un-programmed key into the ignition the old key still sent all the right codes to start the engine cause it was right there on the keyring. No idea if it works though.

THat's CODE1, featured in the post 1995 176 puntos.

This 03 Punto will be a 188, and will use CODE2, there are no red keys.

To do it properly, they key either has to be ordered from FIAT by VIN, or a generic one cut and programmed into the code ECU, then central locking receiver. There is a point where it went from the 2nd case the the 1st.

However, cutting a non coded key and holding the coded one nearby does work.

An independent firm won't under-cut FIAT, you can't (shouldn't) clone these keys.
