Fiat Punto Sporting 1.4T

Are you all having a bad day at work or something?

I'm asking for advice and now I'm being labelled an idiot amongst other things.

Thats because all of the posters in this thread know that you will be making a massive mistake spending 10k on a Punto, we even know that you will definatly regret this purchase in a years time and wish you would have purchase a better 2nd hand car for less.

Just because its second hand, doesnt mean its going to break down constantly and cost you a fortune. Go for a decent second hand car and it will most likely cost you less in possible repairs than that punto.

Personally i'd much rather have a 2006/2007 Focus for that sort of money?

You've said you want a brand new car for £10K but are now asking about one that's 6 years old and has done 50K?

Are you sure that insurance group is right for the Punto, seems rather low for the performace. I would expect more like group10/11

What a ridiculous thread. Argue with whoever is offering you the money.

£5k in your bank for Uni and £5k on a car is far better than a cruddy Punto with 08 on the numberplate which after 3 years of parking on the street in inner city areas will look like a banger.

Anyone on here driven this car?

I'm 20, and have been offered a new car for around the £10k mark. Only it has to be new for reasons I can't get into.

This seems to be the best bet, despite doing 0-62 in 8.6s and having over 200nM of torque it is only I.Group 6. As I'm parking this thing in a dodgy street next year for uni insurance is steep. £750/year is what I've been quoted, but anything with 150bhp or more comes out at £2000+

Just wondering what you lot thought? Should I stay well clear of Fiat or have they changed in recent times?

(Model I'm looking at is an Ex-Demo 1k miles, black Grande Punto Sporting 1.4 Turbo 120bhp)

You can get a brand new (not pre-registered) Grande Punto 1.4 T-Jet Sporting for less than 10K so I wouldn't pay that for an ex-demo.

Nice car, plenty of kit and decent performance for not a lot of cash.

Fuel consumption really hits rock bottom when hammering these Turbo Puntos.

But yeah not a bad car, and if it has to be new or pretty much new then it's not a bad choice, the diesel is faster and heavier but if you don't do many miles then I'd stick with the 1.4

Had a 1.4 Punto from work a few weeks ago to goto Portsmouth and back.

To me it was underpowered, the interior felt cheap and tacky, the car didn't feel special at all, and overall, compared to cars you can buy 1-2 years old for £10,000, it was utter *****.

Also, fuel consumption sucked, even at 70 mph on the M4. Maz is right about spec though, it did have parking sensors, auto sensing lights etc. Probably just more things to go wrong in the future! Oh, the parcel shelf was broken already too. :D

As soon as your name goes onto the logbook of a fiat its value drops to about £20.

Stick the 5 grand in the bank to pay for things at uni before you fall into the usual debt traps and spend 5k on a decent second hand car.

There are plenty of small 05 plates and the like out there to earn a couple of years NCB on.

I have been just looking at a 06 plate skoda fabia with 5000 miles on the clock for 5k.

A quick search of autotrader will tell you all you need to know about why spending 10k on a fiat (or any new car) is not a great idea when your a student who is borrowing that money.

Get a focus for ~3.5K as suggested above. A 1.6 with 60K miles etc. Would last better, you are not going to lose much value on it in 2 years. It will be reliable and get you about. I drove a new punto and found it far too light in the steering and just a bit naff all round (was not the 1.4T though, which may be a bit better).

Get a push bike, that's what I did at uni. Unless your commuting, I don't see a need for a car. Everywhere is within walking distance from my experience.

£3,000 off the list price? That's optimistic even given the credit crunch.

The thing I like about the Punto is it's not slow but not ridiculously quick. I'm really stuggling to find cars of similar performance.

With VW, Seat, Renault etc they'll have a series of cars of about 80-120bhp and then a series of cars 160bhp+ but nothing in the middle which does an insurance-safe 0-62mph speed of say 8 seconds.

OK. So I'm an idiot, will regret it etc. My immediate consideration would be going above my insurance budget and getting a 2nd hand 02 Cooper S. But I've read some horrific things about them on forums. Would you guys be put off by one that has done 50,000 miles?

Finaly, if I ignore all of you and go ahead with the Punto. What price should I get it down to. At current it has 1,000 miles on the clock and he wants £9,000. Would appreciate an actual answer to this and not a bombardment of insults. Of that £5,000 is my own money. So whatver I'd sell it for in 3 years time (Parkers reckon £4,500) I will not personally be losing much money. Should I just accept this and enjoy a brand new 08 plate car?

Cheers

that or you can use public transport.

Not really worth using public transport that much, walking or cycling is usually better :)

And this guy is either winding us up or he really is backwards...

Personally I wouldn't go for this, but:
What's wrong with something like this with £2k for insurance and 1.5k for spares'n'repairs...

I'd take a 50k Cooper S over any Fiat ever made.

I'd also not park a £10k car on the street whilst eating beans becuase I was skint living away at Uni.
