Hello.

Just a quick question. What is involved when the engineer comes out to wire up the fibre optic? I was aware they just wire a new router in but my mum seems to think they have to wire the house up and run tests all around the house?

Well it's not really fibre optic at all.

However if it's BT VDSL (which I'm guessing it is) then they utilise your existing phone line and just put a new faceplate on the master socket and that's that, unless you want the socket moved or an extension fitted.

If it's Virgin Media then it's coax, they will simply run coax cable to your house, mount a small box outside on the wall then run more coax from there to wherever you want it to go inside the house.

The only tests they do are to ensure the line is working correctly which means they hook their kit up to the line they've just installed or faceplate they've just fitted and do their tests. They aren't going to run wires to places that don't need it.

I had my BT fibre installed about a month back and the engineer literally put the new face plate on, took the router and modem out of the boxes and plugged them in. The blurb on the website and that you're told about on the phone - them testing stuff etc - just didn't happen in real life.

Sounds about right, about the time it takes to activate it at the cabinet and put a new faceplate on and unbox your new hub.

Only really need to worry about time/wiring/fibre cables/converters if you get FTTH:

Limited currently to London, and mainly new builds/blocks of flats. They usually do FTTB but my building has FTTH (cupboard in living room), so they installed individual media converters. Highly future proof!

Speeds: 20/1, 100/100 or 1gb/1gb.
