Recently, time for renewal and had heard that fibrus would aggressively try to retain a customer when they get the terminate request from a new supplier. EE looked like the best bet so I placed an order with them, and sure enough Fibrus txted me an offer, which I refused. But then they offered to upgrade me from 500MB to 1GB, and give me new routers, with no price change.
So I went with that. Because it was a new router, it required "an engineer" to do the install. He arrived when agreed and I'm happy with the speed etc.
However
1) Old Nokia router had 5 lan ports. New router has 2x2.5GB ports. One goes to the PON and I have VOIP so one is used for that, so no available ports to connect my PC and my wifi mesh system.
So had to buy a 4 port router
2) Old VOIP didn't need power. New one has a separate box and therefore needs another power socket. Luckily I had 4-way extension socket to hand.
3) Although it came with another Eero7 to use as a mesh system, I tested it and found it was no good for my house that has all solid walls. No problem I thought, I'll just do what I previously did, disable the wifi on the router to stop wifi clashing and use my existing 3 station mesh system.
Unbelievably, the Eero7 has no way to permanently disable wifi. you can do it temporary, but it re-enables after several hrs or on a power cycle. Also I discover the router has no web portal access, only access is via the app.
Other than the last one, none of the above was a game changer. But you'd assume that if they are doing such a swap out they'd tell you in advance that the new install will give you less Lan ports and will require another power point, so you could plan accordingly prior to installation.
Anyhow, On the plus side, I'm paying £28 a month for 1GB on a 18 month contract with no price rises, and Topcashback paid out the £70 for going with EE even though I didn't, which over 18 months means my 1GB is costing about £24 a month.
