Fiery matters

Love fires.

However, last Christmas our chimney was blocked. Needless to say, flames had to go somewhere, and they chose going up the stone wall :/

Has he ever tried coal? If so, what made him decide on wood? How long does a tonne last?

I don't know much about fuel. I'd always thought wood would probably be nicer burning, but coal would be easier to deal with and store.

Not for that fire in that house, no. He has a shed out back, so the wood can be stacked up there relatively easily, also I think the local council would prefer wood to coal as it's more traditional and in keeping with the surroundings (they live in Arbroath) :).

I love an open fire, it's so much more cosy and comforting than central heating.

I'm quite happy with central heating in the rest of the house but I really miss having an open fire in the living room :(

Yeah, I was thinking of doing that but then my inherent risk-taking nature overtook the apprehension, and I just lit the beggar up & made sure I saw smoke coming out of the chimney. :D

Fair enough, that is about as much as you need to make sure of. :)

An open fire is great fun and it makes you feel so much better, like I say you can do the most awesome baked potatoes on it or marshmallows even if you want. They are actually surprisingly good for cooking on if you try a bit of experimentation. :D

Don't buy wood by weight as 1 tonne wet is totally different to 1 tonne of dry wood, normally wood is bought by volume.

Also you really need the chimney lined if your going to burn wood in any quantity as tars easily build up on permeable liners and chimney fires are never fun. I speak from experience, twice. :D

Get it swept at the start of the fire season. :o

My mum had a chimney and flu added to our house when it was being built. She wasn't sure at first, but going home at Christmas and sitting in front of a roaring fire is the best thing ever :)
