FIFA World Cup 2014 - Quarter-finals [4th - 5th July] **spoilers**

It's a funny tournament actually. At the start I'd have said 5 teams could have won it all of them bar Spain have made the semis but none of them have been that impressive!

Germany are the favourites but they've huffed and puffed in a couple of games so aren't infallible.

Why not? Penalty takers can take as long as they like, they don't run up and not make the keeper wait, also penalty takers constantly alter their run to take the penalty as well which is effectively trying to psych out the keeper, why can't keepers do some of the same on their own terms?
 
Van Gaal said he wasn't sure who his best all round keeper was, good idea just having Krul focus on penalties. They must have all talked that through before hand..

I think that was amazing, what we know is that he intended to do it (he did make the change!) and it paid off.

I bet the substitution itself alone must have made Costa Rica think about WTF as well.

Except for the time he dived the other way. I think what makes Krul impressive, or at least seem impressive is he's not a keeper who picks a direction and sticks to it and often dives entirely the wrong way. He dived towards the ball 5 out of 5 times. Of course, diving the right way and missing it 5 out of 5 times is no better than guessing where to dive before and saving even 1 out of 5.

Had he dived the right way against the 5 dutch penalty takers, I think he'd have saved no goals at all. The first penalty he saved was a bit easy, but had he chose the other direction early it would have been a goal. He's a good keeper, and he also hadn't played for 120 minutes so maybe had a bit more energy, a bit more mental focus.
 
I didn't get the criticism for the call at the time really, he knows the goalkeepers better than anyone else does so i'm sure he had his reasons for doing it. Great call by him and shows he has balls of steel.

It was strange, people overreact to strange things, given how it turned out it was the correct call, the last save was fantastic, the other one was a poor penalty.

Costa Rica goalie didn't have a hope of saving any of the ones coming his way
