I remember when I said time and time again lukaku wasn’t a top four club player even when he was at Everton. I said he was crap even then. Drunkenmaster in particular would write essays on why I was wrong. United fans would tell me I was wrong, until they got him.

As for Martinez, I cannot believe how long the Belgians stuck with him, it’s criminal that side never won anything.

The thing with Lukaku is hat fundamentally his stats are great for a striker. The issue is that stats don't tell you the full story and at the sharp end of football, fans want to enjoy watching a player. They will tolerate you when you are banging them in no matter how "ugly" your style is but they will probably not love you at the big clubs. As soon as you stop banging them in or seem to be the reason for results turning they will be on you like a pack of dogs.

Lukaku doesn't pass "the eye test". Certain players can have great stats but you just don't enjoy watching them. Other players don't have amazing stats but fans of the team will tell you that they are vital and they love them for it.
 
I never understood the fascination of Martinez. The saving grace was the 2018 run but outside of that they were always looking poor with the talent they had. Being ranked 1 or 2 also seems unbelievable over his reign.

Exactly Lukaku was basically a brute of man that could bully defenders and sneak a goal. In his defence he did have good situational awareness which is important as a striker so more often than not he was in the right place at the right time for a tap in but would always miss due to his complete lack of natural talent.
