I received my fiio e17 and e9 yesterday but when they are docked using the optical connection on the e17 I get no sound from the e9 is this normal? I am also getting bsod's when connecting them by USB but I am going to update the USB drivers later to see if that helps.

I have had no problems with my E17+E9 combo. Howver a few things to check.

1. Is windows configured to output via the optical connection?
2. Do you have you plugged anything into the analogue input on the E9? This will take priority over digital inputs.
3. Try disabling every other sound interface in windows apart from the one you're using (the optical conenction).

Could you post a little about how it's set up and also what the BSOD says.

The optical is setup and working fine, if I use the e17 on it's own or if I plug the headphones into it while it's docked it will work but there is just no audio through the e9 output.
I have nothing else plugged into the e9 apart from the power cable and headphones.
The bsod I'm getting is etronxhci.sys which has something to do with the usb.

In that case i would go down the route of installing the latest chipset/USB controller drivers and also may as well install ASIO4ALL. If that fails then i would point the blame to the E9 dock. Try just using the E9 to amplify without docking the E17, i.e. LineOut from the E17 --> LineIn on the E9.
