Hello. I'm looking to compress an 800mb file as small as possible - I need to upload to a remote server but have a pitiful 28kbs upload speed so uploading 800megs will take hours  . I've been able to get it down to 720mb but it is still not small enough. Does anyone know of any good freeware high-compression applications?

Thanks :D

What type of file is it? I would split up the file into several smaller files.

7-Zip has very high compression on its native format it is even better at zips than Winzip.

http://www.7-zip.org/

Not only is it free but full of open source goodness.

Thank you! That is great :D

Multiple folders, each with multiple files inside... Compressing each of these individually or in smaller groups seems a good idea thanks.

Or let the program split to different size volumes/files (e.g. 3.5" or 1.44MB, DVD±R or 4481MB, etc). Don't know if 7-Zip does that but, WinRAR & WinZip certainly do (http://www.filehippo.com/software/compression/). The latter with more options :D
