Looking for a good tutorial on how to achieve basic file and folder sharing between my main PC upstairs ( Windows 7 Home Premium 64 ) and my other PC downstairs in spare room ( Vista Ultimate x86 ).

Had a bash at it this afternoon but just tied myself up in knots. At one point I must have changed something I shouldn't have done because the W7 machine lost all internet access. Had to System Restore it back to this morning.

Any good step by step tutorials out there?.

Dropbox is great for small tasks, but try and share a few gigs worth of data and it all falls apart.
Doesn't Vista also have the Homegroup function?, if so, create a new homegroup in Vista, note the code, then when you setup the homegroup in 7 you tell it that there is already a homegroup and you enter your code.

Next up right click on the file/folder you wish to share, select share with - homegroup (it's up to you whether you choose read only or read/write).

That should be it. :)

I don't use Homegroup. You can if you like but I use the following method.

In Windows 7, go to Network and Sharing Centre Advanced Sharing settings. Then enable network discovery, turn on file and printer sharing, turn on sharing in public, media streaming, off in my case, 128-bit encryption, turn off password protected sharing and use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers.

Vista settings are very similar...
