I'm attempting but utterly failing to connect two computers using an ethernet cable (Cat5.e) so I can simply backup some documents. I have never done this kind of thing before so can anyone help me? Both computers use XP Home and when I just plug the cables in I get "Limited or no connectivity". I tried searching the forums but could not find anything useful. I did see one thread a few days ago but I couldn't find it

Are you using any kind of router to give an IP address to the computers?

If not you will need to give each pc an IP address to give them the ability to speak to each other.

Are the computers connected to each other directly? If so are you using a cross over ethernet cable?

Are they on the same workgroup?

I'm just using a CAT5.e cable to connect them, I am not using any kind of router. How would I give them an IP address?

To connect 2 computers (directly with a cable) and set up a simple network, the type of cable required is CAT5e Cross Over, not "straight", now I'm sure you are aware of this, but as you didn't state what kind of CAT5e cable you were using I thought I would just state it. :)

Darn, it's not a crossover cable. I need to backup now. Can I use my router (Netgear WGR614 V5) to create a simple network if I connect both computers to it via ethernet cables? Sorry but I'm a complete n00b when it comes to networking.

Yes, simply connect the CAT5e cable into the RJ-45 ethernat port of the router, and run the Network Setup Wizard on both computers, and also the Networking Wizard in your Firewall. :)

The CAT5e cable will have the male RJ-45 plug, put this into the female RJ-45 port on back of your Router. :)
