Looking to transfer some files(mainly music) from my gaming pc onto my laptop
is it ok to use any cheapo cable that you can get or should i pay a bit more
Both pc s are windows7

What cable are we talking here? A network cable? (ethernet/cat5)

EDIT:
If they are on the same network (wireless or wired connected to the same router) then you should be able to share files as they are, you won't necessarily need any extra cables, though a cable may be faster than wireless.

no,a file transfer cable, when you go to attempt this task 1 option is to use a file transfer cable(you can buy cheap cables on the bay and just wondered if they do the job ok)

Essentially a USB cable utilised for file transferring, why Don't you just use an Ethernet cable / wireless orbuy a memory stick? Going over network should be fine aslong as you can ping from

One machine to the other and you have file sharing and permissions setup correctly

I have no idea what a file transfer cable is, do you have a link?

The usual way you transfer files is to setup a share and copy the files over the network. Memory stick is also a possibility. Anther other way (if you have a lot of files) is to take the drive out of one pc and put it in the other.

Windows 7 has a few security settings that need fiddling with before you can access files remotely.

File transfer cable is a really old tech. It used to be back to back serial cables in the days before networking was popular.

Get a crossover cable, set 2 static IPs on your PC and laptop, then drag and drop files between the 2 at up to 100MB a second.

sometimes the easiest solution is the best,i aint gonna mess about with this,8gb memory stick on its way(why didnt ithink of that)

Do you have a router? -Can they both use the internet at the same time in your house?

Windows file sharing is what you want to do here. There's some very easy guides to follow, and it's all built into Windows.

Everyone uses this method
