My friends PC died on them, psu and mobo. They now need to transfer all the files from their C: drive, OS drive to a new pc. I have suggested building a new PC and then using the same drive and just updating all of the drivers after replacing the mobo and PSU. Is there an easier way for them to transfer their files whilst the old pc is inoperable? They do not want to reinstall windows and therefore loose all the info on their C: drive.

You might be hard pressed to swap out the mobo and boot it up. Chances are it won't boot as the mobo and chipset drivers will all be wrong. (Windows will want reactivating)
I'd slave the hdd into another machine, copy the data over. Then build the new pc, fresh install of windows and copy the data back, weather by network, DVD, usb drive or slaving back into the other machine.

the OS installation will recognise the old version of windows and put it in a folder called windows.old where all the files will be (vista, not sure about XP, think XP will just install to C:\windows2)
Why it is sometimes possible to just swap the mobo and boot to the same installation thats not advisable as your really gonna bloat up your registry and have all sorts of things trying to load.
Why not just plug the disk into your PC and back up what they want onto a DVD, or external drive
