So I was trying to send the copy of my mums stuff (hdd recovery I did) directly to my brothers computers yesterday and using torrents, he was downloading at 2.6kbs and no matter what we tried it wouldn't budge any higher. I got a feeling, BT have done something to torrents as we tried a well known torrent site for some random tests and he was getting really poor downloads, even though I was downloading the same file @ 5mb/s and uploading at full speed to.

I tried using TeamViewer but I think its actually limited, kept jumping briefly between 160kbs and 320 but only very quickly so the accuracy was well off.

I was wondering, is there anything similar to say MSN to send files that has resume that would send at my full bandwidth? (I have 50meg down/5meg up so 500kbs ish)

You could make a dropbox account, upload the file to it (assuming it's under 2Gb total) and then get your brother to login to the dropbox on the other PC, it'll start a sync straight away, bringing the file down to his PC. That's about the simplest way I can think of doing it.

You can always split it and just have less than 2Gb on dropbox at a time as that's the maximum free size you can have.

Very, very easy to use and only needs an email address to get free access. Saves a bit of faffing about with FTP etc if you don't have a site you can upload freely to.

What I would do is use 7zip to split this file into loads of 5mb chunks with ultra compression

Then create an FTP or use Dropbox / Windows Live Mesh to transfer them

Its about 2gig in total.. just thought there would be a simple program to send and recieve at the same time! :(

Set up an FTP server using FileZilla Server. That's what I use. It's quicker than using file hosting websites for one off uploads.

Unless you want to host your file for multiple downloads, it's better to just set up an FTP and let them download directly from you.

I also have 50Mb down / 5Mb up and always get a solid ~560KB/s.

Of course.. an FTP server that makes total sense lol.

Had a little trouble with: 200 Type set to A

but I wasnt using an FTP client (connecting to myself to test it as he's afk) but now I think I've cracked it. Using SmartFTP - jeez thats changed since I used it years ago.. at least this is what I think I used.

Nah it really doesn't want to play ball, getting 425 / 421 errors, all firewalls are off.. the lot :(

Edit: Had to DMZ him on his router, so its a port issue but I'm not sure which port it'll be going through to him as?

Edit 2: So I have my FTP on 13339 port, I've unlocked that port on his router.. but I'm guessing it doesnt go on that? So for the time being he's on DMZ (id rather not but its working).. am I right in thinking I need to unlock port 21 as that seems to be the standard FTP port?

How come yours is on port 13339? did you specify it yourself?

You'll probably have to also specify it when connecting to the server...
eg. ftp://81.43.41.112:13339

Also, you only need to do port forwarding server side.

I set it to that as its set on my server/box for the future, just easier to have it managed to one port.

I'm using SmartFTP for managing the FTP connections to the server. I did try going to it as if I was typing in an address (from My Computer) but was having issues originally. It was 13337 just because thats what a cool kid would do but I was having conflicting issues with that port and I'm not sure why anyway this seems to work however, as I said Ive had to set the DMZ to my brothers IP at his house/router to get his to connect.

I'm fairly confident that makes it a port issue but I have the 13339 port routed to his IP though I dont think that matters, the files are nearly done now but it'd be nice to know what the specific problem was. I think the FTP port is meant to be 21 so I'm gunna fiddle with that tomorrow after work unless someone can help! :D

I dont quite think you're understanding what I'm saying mate, probably not being clear enough.

The port is 13339
I have it set on my router to forward to the internal IP of my server, any incoming traffic on that port
I have it set on his router to forward that port to his internal IP

I get a connection from his pc/client to my server but I get 425 and 421 errors when I try to refresh the directory list, even though I actually make a connection and checking the server logs I see its connected and it even reports not being able to make a data connection.

Thats with all firewalls off on both ends/anti virus off aswell.

The only way around it is to set his IP to a DMZ which works, so I'm left wondering which port number I need to forward on his router as that seems the only logical course to take to resolve it without just leaving the DMZ on.

I've connected to the server internally with no problems which again leads me to the question of which port I need to unlock. I think it might be 21 but its still transferring and I dont wanna stop it this far in.
