Hi, I need a centralized storage for my home network and have decided to build a fileserver.

I was going to get a NAS but want to add more hard drives later on without extra cost.

Is there any software for XP available for easily configureing permissions as to what PC has access to what files?

google for freeNAS, this is a basic open source NAS operating system which i think will fit your requirements. Basically if you have a basic low spec pc doing nothing, it's perfect for you to stick all your hds in it and install freeNAS. That way you can add more capacity as you see fit in the future.

Basically what I need is a central PC for keeping music / tv and video on to be accessed by the 3 other PC's around the house.

But I also want to set up some private storage for each PC / User for there documents and I also want to restrict who can delete files from the AV collection.

Not sure wether FTP would be the answer, other users in the house moan everything is too complicated already lol so need to be able to give them something on there PC they can just double click to view the files.

Edit:
Components I have already:
2ghz Celeron
256mb DDR400
mobo/case/psu

Should do?

I dont mind trying other operating systems if it would be better but I'd prefer the most simple route possible as I cba messing around with it much.

XP has inbuilt functionality to configure permissions and file shares without the need to install anything else.

It is better to work with users and groups rather than computers to control access so i would suggest creating an account for each user on each of the computers in your house. Then create all the accounts (with the same password) on the file server. Then assign permissions to the folders on the file server as you see fit.

Dan.
