Just wondering if anyone knows the MOT rules on rust etc?

I've been given a Golf thats got 2 rust holes on the NS sill, neither of them are any bigger than a 50p coin and I was just wondering if this is an MOT failure.

If it is, if I filled them with some P40/P38 sanded it all down and resprayed the whole sill would this be good enough for the MOT or still a failure? I would weld it but struggling to find someone to lend me a welder!!

Thanks a lot

Ross

I was under the impression the only way to fix this correctly was to either replace the sill or cut a chunk out of the sill and weld a new metal plate in?

Simply sanding down and filling the hole might get you through the MOT but since its structural i would want it fixing correctly, its your choice.

If they can't see corrosion or knock a hole through with their little hammer then it will pass. Body filler hardly has a lot of structural integrity though, should have had it welded tbh.

I was given the car for nothing so I'm just trying to get it through and MOT and flog it..

Any ideas how much it would cost at a body shop to get 2 little holes patched up?

Nice, fix it correctly before trying to con someone out of money for a dangerous vehical.

Shouldn't cost much to pay someone to weld some plate on if you prep the areas yourself.

Depends entirely on the sort of holes & quality of repair. Welding can be cheap if its simply a matter of a small plate over a hidden part of the car, once you have to start smoothing & getting a nice ish finish, the labour & costs can shoot up.

Edit: How olds the Golf?

My Dad's having it so maybe I should fix it properly lol

If it really is just 2 straightforward sill patches, somewhere in the region of 50 quid should be enough to have it done at a backstreet garage. It doesn't have to be a work of art as only the top of the sill is really visible, a plate will be fine as long as the weld is continuous.
Make sure you paint over it afterwards as a dab of underseal won't do much to prevent future corrosion.

If you want to have the whole sill replaced then it will get expensive, anywhere from £100 to £250 a side I'd say.
