I've just had some new sockets installed and was wondering what people recommend for filling the hole where the wires are recessed into the wall above the skirting boards.

Electrician recommended just using filler but it's quite a gap to fill and I'm not sure if the filler would set.

Get a bag of one coat plaster, you can usually get small bags of this for DIY use. It can be used to fill thicker holes and can achieve a decent level finish with it. Filler is ok for smaller holes, but on larger holes it'll sink in the middle and take ages top dry.

If the existing plaster is a bit crumbly and dusty you can brush some pva/water on just before applying the plaster. It'll also stop the plaster drying too fast and cracking.

How many sockets? Enough to justify a bag of browning to fill the bulk of the hole and then finish with multi? It's what I did, but my whole house was rewired.

Having said that, in the last few days I did the final (double) wall-plate for some ethernet cable on a ground floor room. I went with the aforementioned expanding foam and fine surface filler as I didn't want to buy any more browning/multi. Once sanded, it's good enough for wallpapering over.

As the above poster says, fill most of the chase with bonding coat, make sure you give it a few scratches when its nearly gone off (but not too deep) and then finish with multi purpose plaster, The bonding coat goes off so past that by the time you have gone round them all you can top coat it.

If you find it difficult to get the finishing plaster right, then I suppose you can use filler on top once post of the hole is filled with bonding coat

A 25kg bag of bonding and a 25kg bag of multi for a bit of chasing? A small bag of one coat is a much better solution imo, it's designed for this sort of application. Fills up to 20mm deep holes and you can get a great finish if you finish up with a wet trowel before it sets.

I guess it depends how much there is to do, but from the Op I get the impression it's just a few sockets.

It is only a few sockets currently, hence why I decided to do it myself.

Will go see what I can get hold of later down diy shop

Dry self mix filler, polyfil or homebase/b&q home brand will be fine, will be dry by the morning, sand down and refill for a final finish ,may take a couple of goes, £5.

Ready mixed takes a lot longer to dry hard but self mix is much quicker.

You can use easifill in 2 or 3 layers, personally being the fussy ****er I am I use bonding then multifinish and then a full redecorate.

Refuse to have any imperfections in my walls, flat out refuse.
