Filming in public? (no not that ;))

Generally you have to get permission from the council to do such things. Thats what happened with a film project i was part of. We had the police stop us at one point, asking what we were up to and if we had written permission. So make sure you check out all avenues before you start filming :)

This is how I understand it; Legally you don't need permission to photograph/video anyone (young or old) in a public place, and for private use. You would need permission (a release) from anyone identifiable in the picture if you wished the picture to be used publicly (i.e. in a magazine, on your website), but if it were to be used for/in a news article you don't need permission. The only case where this is not true is if your videoing could be classed as harassment.

I would be as blatant as possible whilst doing it, its only if you were caught doing it sneakily that people might suspect you of something.

Yes, just set up tripod and film it. Don't hide it at all, in fact the more obvious and bigger the camera and tripod the better :p

Long as you are standing in a public area, filming a public area it'll be fine. Think of all the paparazzi snapping celebrities doing shopping or New crew doing the news on the streets, its perfectly legal.

I agree with the above! you shouldnt have any problem at all for college/uni use. The only thing to be carefull of is using a tripod in a public place. It can be classed as a health and safety hazzard (and you would be liable if anyone damaged themselves by tripping over it etc). You may also find you would be moved on by security or police for using a tripod as you should officially get permission (and depending on who owns the land you film on) a license to set up a tripod etc.

I also wouldnt go alone, as you are going to attract a LOT of attention.

you need to get the BBC logo on your camera

then watch at all the people jumping around in front of you shouting "hello mum !!"

Im quite sure you allowed to film anyone as long as its not bringing you commercial gain. I.E. your using their identities to bring you money, which its not so you should be alright.

Wavers are only normally required when the person on footage is giving a voiced part. For example, I did some filming with ITV a while back for "Everything Must Go!". We had to ask those who were interviewed for permission to use their footage on TV, yet for those wandering in the background we needed no such permission.

Thanks a lot for all your help guys, exactly what I needed

I think I'll scrap the tripod idea after being reminded about health and safety, with how things are these days I wouldnt wanna risk a lawsuit from someone not looking where they are going then blaming me :p

Will just keep a steady hand :D
