Well, after getting my a new lens for Christmas, I now also want to get myself some nice filters. I'm mainly wanting to start using graduated ND filters for my landscapes, and I see the Cokin P series mentioned quite a lot. Was just wondering what people thought about these filters, and whether there are any alternatives that are worth looking into?

I've got a set, including graduated ND. For me, they are a bit of a faff, and I rarely use them, however the cokin P series is pretty much the cheapest you'll get. I've heard complaints that the ND filters are less neutral and more grey, but I'd start off with them unless you're looking to spend a few hundred on a lee filter set up.

Of course... you could always take a few photos at different exposures and blend in photoshop...:)
 
Thanks. Exposure blending is usually the way I get around the problem at the moment, although it's a hassle and doesn't always work, which is why I was looking at a filter. I reckon for the price I might as well just go for it, then if it doesn't work perfectly I won't be too bothered.
 
I've got a cokin p series setup for my 10-20mm and it's perfectly fine for the small amount I use it. I don't notice any colour cast on my ND8 and my linear polarizer does the job.
 
I've seen too many complaints about cokin grads producing a magenta cast.

If you're serious about landscapes and are able to up your budget slightly have a look for the hi-tech range which offer good bang for buck.

I use a full set of Lee grads but I know a lot of people who are happy with the hi-tech grads.
 
Had Cokin P grads, they cause a greyish cast so I got rid and bought some Formatt, they're a bit more expensive but worth it imo
 
Thanks for that guys. From what I've read, it seems like I can use Hitech filters in a Cokin P holder. Is this right? 'Cause if so, that sounds better, as the Hitech holder costs £46 alone.

Yes, the Hitech/Formatt filters use Cokin sizing (85mm/100mm), so Cokins holders are fine. You must be looking at the metal holder though at that price? They also do plastic ones which are as good as the Cokin ones, but cheaper. Don't forget to get an adaptor for the holder for whatever lenses you'll be using.

I have a set of ND grads, and I am very happy with them. I got mine from the link above, and they arrived inside a week.

Ah right, didn't see that one, thanks Tooks. Looks like these are the ones I'll go for then, since they don't cost any more than the Cokin ones.
