Final Fantasy 8 - an appreciation thread!

Im playing through 8 now, Just at the end of disc 2, But after playing 9 through last week, I just find 8 to be very dull, Love the junctioning the summons system and all that, I just hate the music and the characters, especially Squall, Hes damn annoying.

Personally I preferred the materia system to junctioning. It seemed to make normal spells redundant in favour of GF spamming.

Maybe I'm missing the point of junctioning, but if I want to maximize my stats I need to have 100 of a particular spell. Why would I ever want to use this spell as it'd reduce my stats?

7 just has this special charm that I don't know what the hell it's doing to me but turns me into this blubbering mess of nostalgia and happiness when I play it. :D

I get exactly the same feeling even when just thinking about it? Am I in love with FF7

I have always liked FF8 i thought the story is great and the first mission is pretty epic. I also like the fact that you can miss the summons completely if your not careful and like 7 it is quite hard at times if your crap or your characters are not the right level FF9 was also the same but FF10 > load of crap.

I havent played the latest one yet as i am actually scared its going to be utter ****.

I think this weekend is going to be the start of a new game on FF8 the gf can go and do something else.

8 is definitely my favourite FF (non MMO), everything about it is great. Story, characters, card game, junction system just brilliant.

Really need to get back into it after the WC.

Still in the womb... So that would be the womb of his mother right?

So his mother isn't Jenova?

Bleh, your post just furthers my belief that the plot to FFVII makes absolutely no logical sense! :D

In the traditional sense, no his mother isn't Jenova. It was actually, as stated above, an assistant of Hojo named Lucretia who also happened to be Vincent's lover which indicates Vincent could actually be Sephiroths' father.

The Jenova cells have pretty much overtaken Sephiroths' body however, hence his superhuman abilities, which is why he regards her as his mother.

Squall comes around ;). I found 8 one of those Final Fantasys that relies on the players empathy towards the characters. Sure, we all hated Squall, up until a certain point. Faith, Danny :D
It's my 2nd favourite FF after 6, my 3rd being 7, then 9. :D

You didn't always need 100 to max out stats. I can't remember exact numbers but say you junctioned ultima to your HP stat you'd max out at say 60 spells, meaning you have 40 to play with as you wish.

It was all about pairing the correct magic with the stat that it was most effective with!

Couldn't stand most of the characters in FF8. I know a few people though who didn't like the style of FF7&9 and couldn't get on with them, but really liked 8.

my favorite is FF7, but i must admit back when i first got FF8, it was just as epic playing through tat for the first time as 7 was. it felt like a lot bigger game too. much better graphics for its time.

both stories are equally as good, 7's is still my favorite though. i still play it to date on the ps2 :D

X was the last "good" final fantasy for me. XII was rubbish compared to 7, 8 and X.

9 ? don't get me started on that POS.

Love everyones different opinions on all the games :)

Mine go...10,9,7,13,8,12,10-2 from best to worst, Not counting the 2D ones as ive only played 3 of them, and not that far.

I just love 9, Its music, Art Style, Medieval setting, Villains, Minigames, everything!

Edit!
Also, May as well ask here among the FF Fans :) Dont suppose anyone knows of any plans to bring the PS1 releases of the 2D FFs to the PSN store? Im desperate to carry on with 6, Kefkas laugh demands it!

Regarding the Jenova background, I think you need to play crisis core to get the full picture too (and obvious ff7 and advent children, which has just been re-released with extras btw).
I'm just at Nabelheim in crisis core, but don't play it often enough to fill in the gaps really.

FF8 is brilliant, I've been playing that on my PSP too. I've only completed it once before and missed a lot.

Finally, to top it off I installed FF7 on my PC last night and started to download mods for it. Whilst I'm part way through on the PSP (just left golden saucer) I'd prefer trying it on the PC after tracking don a friend with it on the PC!

FF8 is good but it is too easy:
-If you refine Jespers and use one of the refining abilities Diablos learns then you can junction 100 demi's to a character before you even enter the first dream, so attacks take off 2000 and everything is one hit kill for most of the game.
-When you get the Ragnorak go to Island closest to Heaven/Hell and within an hour or two every character will be level 100 with all GF abilities learnt.

I really like FF8, I have it from release but I thought that not being able to go into cities on cd 4 was a bit gay.

I will always prefer FF7 though as the story is just more epic imo. Actually FF7 and FF10 are the best games I have ever played.

FF9 was good but lame compared to 7 and 8.
FF10-2 was a joke
FF12 I am near the end of and it is good but not epic
FF13 is in the wrapper awaiting me to finish FF12
FF6 I played once on ps1 and haven't touched since! I need to!

FF7 was the better game (for fun and design) but FF8 was always my favourite. Just loved playing it and the art style was better in my opinion. Not to mention floating schools waging war on eachother,

Or they'll just get owned by Malboro's.

There's something you need to get/do in order to survive the malboro's status change attacks. I forget what it is off the top of my head.

Pretty sure if you just take a set of low/medium level characters to that island then they'll just be owned.
