Just got an email informing me that Final Fantasy VIII has been released on PC through Steam. Currently selling for £9.99.

It includes a Magic Booster that helps you boost your spells. When Magic Booster is used, the player’s inventory of the following spells is increased by 100: Cure, Cura, Curaga, Fire, Fira, Blizzard, Blizzara, Thunder, Thundara, Sleep, Blind, Silence, Berserk, Bio, Esuna, Aero, Confuse, Break, Zombie.

It also includes Chocobo World.

I think I might just wait for the next steam sale though and pick it up cheap :)

That's my plan, its on the list of things to grab in the winter sale at the end of the month.

Of course, never was massively into 8 like I was with 7, but still.. for the sake of having it..

Needs the good quality music adding to it, at the moment I've heard the music is the MIDI stuff.

Still going to buy it though, I've never completed this one despite numerous attempts, can test out my new graphics card with it too :D

I'm in a minority of people who preferred FF8, great game! :)

Although 7 was emense, 8 was great so I'm with you....FF8 over FF7, but only just.

The draw magic in FF8 made it more oO(fun!?) to make yourself stronger, instead of just beating the enemies to death

FF8 was the first FF game I really played. 7 is epic but I always really liked 8.

Nothing quite like Rinoa's Rover Cannon :D

I liked FF8 a lot but still prefer FF7! :D First time I played it didn't really rate it though - until I started it again due to the FF9 release coming soon :p

Thought I'd wait for this to come on a sale but before I knew it the 20% GMG voucher had been used :o

I got all the FF soundtracks in .ogg format. Maybe it's possible to do a straight swap?

I loved both FF7 & 8! Played them on the PC in year 2001. Therefore didn't get to play 9+ as they weren't ported over.

I didn't know that FF8 was on Steam until last night, when a close friend (who knew I was an FF fanatic) gifted the game to me as an early Christmas surprise. At work, we have agreed on who would cover the office over Christmas week and New Year week, and I've been given the whole NY week off. It is very clear what I'll be doing that week! :D

Currently played 20-30 minutes, just enough time for me to leave the SeeD garden and fight a few mobs on the 3D world map outside, then saved the game and exited. I LOVE the victory music! (Still based on FF7's).

Will pick this up in the sale. As soon as IX is available though, ill be buying.

Not going to happen. IX is still my favourite, but VII and VIII both got PC ports around the time of their release, IX never did, so I can't see them going to the effort of porting that 13 years late!

Bought yesterday on a nostalgic whim. Just looked now to see I've already invested 18 hours. All in all it's a good port and I've played more of it than I have the ff7 port (though that;s probably because I played 7 to death back in the day).

Music is pretty poor because it's all MIDI. Anyone know of some straight forward soundtrack mod, please share. Also Laguna's battle music remains awesome even in MIDI format.

Very tempting, I preferred the story of VII over VIII but think the actual gameplay mechanics in VIII are better. Shame that "completing" the card game requires a guide as there is no way you could get all of the trades without a walkthrough to tell you who to beat/lose to at what point.

Why are you calling it a port, is it not upgraded for PC's? I was under the impression that was what they did.

There releasing Final Fantasy IX on Steam as well? That would be awesome, I never got a chance to try that one!

My understanding was that this was a slightly spruced up version of the original PC port. It has been upgraded a bit but only in that itcan be run at higher resolutions (unless I've missed something). The character models have been enhanced a bit so they don't look pixelated but the prerendered backgrounds have been left as is so they do look pretty low-res still. Also it remains in 4:3 and the overworld looks terrible.

This version is using the same sound files as the original PC port i.e. MIDI files instead of the mp3 used by the psx original. This is probably the main issue I have. I can understand that they haven't done HD backgrounds because it would have meant a lot of work to redo them but arguably the poor quality of the soundtrack was one of the most contentious issues with the original port so why they've decided to keep that version is beyond me.

Don't get your hopes up. Can't remember where I heard it but I'm sure it was said it was just 7 and 8 being re-released as they were the only ones they had done PC ports of.
