After many a week stressing over what to get, numerous changes, and asking on here, all in the whilst; waiting for funds to accrue in my bank account I have come up with this:

Already have:

- Antec 900 Case
- Samsung SH-S223Q/BEBN 22x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer Lightscribe ReWriter (x2)
- Samsung SpinPoint F1 640GB SATA-II 16MB Cache

Looking to get:

I don't really game at that high a resoultion at the minute , as I am on an FX5200 at the minute, lol, on a 17" LCD Samsung monitor for a while, until I get my room decorated, then I may go upto a 22" or 24" LCD monitor, maybe HD? But I also plan to hook this up to my 40" Sony 1080p LCD in my room aswell as my monitor.

Computer will be used exclusively for gaming, with light stuff such as messenger, internet browsing, and media player/itunes. Never overclocked before, but may dabble with this rig abit.

Just wanna get an opinion to wether this will be sufficient for a while, I don't have any recent games due to my current computer, like COD4, Crysis, Bioshock etc. but would like to get them, aswell as one I'm looking at getting; Fallout 3.

All help is appreciated as always.

Cheers.

Very nice system, that will breeze everything atm bar Crysis but will still run it at high settings at a high res.

Just checking: Your not going to crossfire that gfx card are you? If you think you might then it might be more benefitial looking into an X48 mobo.

looks ok dude but i would ditch the artic cooler 7 for a TRUE, and also loose vista home for ultimate 64. Apart from that looks awesome

Looks good, I agree with the above about the TRUE, but I wouldnt bother with Vista ultimate. Unless you need the extra features there isnt any point spending the extra money

mx2 is better than AS5. unless you fancy going to another seller, where you can get OCZ freeze which is better.

I'd keep vista home premium rather than pay extra for ultimate that you're unlikely to use. Also the freezer 7 pro comes with paste pre applied so I dont know if you'd want to bother changing it =/

i only suggested ultimat 64 as i know that can see more than 4 gig of ram and if the op wants to upgrade he can later and make use of more than 4gig. This is just what i have read so correct me if im wrong

To see more than 4 gb you need a 64 bit OS, it soesnt need to be ultimate, 64 bit home edition will do the trick also

I don't think I'll be doing crossfire, but would the cheapest X48 board (DFI Lan Party DK X48-T2R be a decent enough board? As I can't really afford to stress much from what I have to spend.

i agree to ditch the cpu cooler, id go for a noctua but thats just personal preference, please dont get anything less than a 24" 1920 x 1200 monitor with that gfx =)

Get cheaper mobo and use the diff for better cooler(Tuniq or TRUE - u might look elsewhere tho as prices here for these 2 shooted over the sky).
Swap the thermal compound for MX-2.
PC8500 memory for that CPU is a must !!

this will do more than fine.
Also for this GPU I wont be playing on anything less than 30 inch tbh, I would consider getting 4850x2 instead, will be more than enough for you I bet. Many ppl go for the shiney most expensive stuff without really need for it, I'm pretty sure you wont be using this stuff :), and GPU is always easy to upgrade later on if you need more power - no point wasting money now if you not gonna be using it at max for the next year.

Get 2hdds in raid0 + 3rd storage instead, that will improve your performance better :). And a bigger monitor - 24 inch minimum

Is the regular Asus Rampage Formula X48 a good board for crossfire then? I know it's more expensive over the P5Q. And would crossfiring two Powercolour HD 4870 512's be that beneficial over a 4870 X2, or would I better getting an 4870 X2 and waiting for quite a while until the price comes down, then buy another to crossfire if I need the extra?

Right, So I think I have it sewn for the minute, lol, after discussing it with some of my mates, I've decided upon going for crossfire, just dunno what yet:

Toying with going for an X48 Rampage Formula, with 4GB GeIL/Corsair/OCZ 8500, then either crossfired 4850's or 4870's, or a single 4870 X2, then having it crossfired later down the line with another X2 when more money resides in my bank account and *** prices have fell.

Question I ask will the corsair PSU up there be sufficient enough? I should imagine so.

I'm reviving this thread for two questions:

I'm going to order some of this kit today, if I do, will it ship today and be able to arrive on Monday, or will it ship on Monday and arrive Tuesday on the cheapest shipping option? I ask because I'm gonna get it delivered at work rather than home.

And will that rating PSU be alight for running the X48/E8600/Geil 8500, and 4870X2 then eventually, 2x 4870X2's in crossfire?

*EDIT: Nevermind about the first question, just looked at the delivery dates in the checkout and it can only arrive on Tuesday.

if you decide to go crossfire...then the p5e board is an excellent buy and supports full crossfire with the X38 chipset....just speaking from personal experience...:)

It would be better to get the 4870X2 (rather than two 4870 cards) imo, leave future upgrades open and you get same performance.

PSU should be fine for one 4870X2 and the rest of your rig, but for dual 4870X2 cards i would want something more powerfull like the Tagan PipeRock TG900-BZ 900w Modular BZ Series PSU

Though it costs more for the PSU this cost would be easily made up if you got the Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.16GHz (1333FSB) CPU instead of the E8600. Theyre practically the same speed and yet its a £70 saving. There is no way i would buy the overpriced E8600.

Oh and here is a quick review of that DFI crossfire mobo..

Be aware that OEM Vista can only be installed on one set of hardware ever. If you upgrade your motherboard or change too many of the other bits you have to buy it again.

Performance wise, I have a slower CPU, half the RAM and half the graphics card (standard 4870) and my rig plays every game I've thrown at it including CoD4 and Bioshock at 1680*1050 full settings perfectly. Crysis it struggles a bit on Very High but that's it, and Crysis is known to have a flawed engine.

lol, so I will have to shell out another £60 for another version of Windows if I ever want to change my mobo, which doesn't even come with 64bit in the box by all accounts?
