Exactly what I was going to say.

I'd go for a 3930K, with a X79 socket motherboard, especially if you are running VMs. Or maybe you should even go for an 8 core Xeon processor.

Staying within the current budget, i think the i7 ivybridge system gives good value.

VM use would only be intermiitent as I prefer woking on the base metal (or OS in this case). VMs used for old XP system and maybe occassionally testing of beta software releases.

In that case I'd agree, the i7 Ivy is definitely where you want to be.

It looks like a good build :) one thing I would say, check the clearance for the cooler over that RAM in the motherboard, and maybe the cooler in the case because it is rather large, but otherwise I'd say you have everything you would need, and its a good selection of components.

I think you could be right about the memory. The Guy in the video says that it will only support 'naked' low profile memory. (ie. no heat spreaders).

He specifically mentioned the G Skill Ripjaws.

However, it does beg the question: "who in their right mind develops a product that will rule out 90% of their customers?".

Noctua have a page telling users which memory is compatible here

Be Quiet do not even have a page showing the maximum height of memory permitted.

If anyone knows what would be good memory to use, then please let me know.

Ideally, would like something like the G.Skill RipJawsX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-14900C10 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit (F3-14900CL10D-16GBXL) that I chose originally.

Kingston Hyper X Genesis appears to be an option, but I did not see any 8GB sticks and it does not appear to be as fast as the G-Skill.

The alternative is to use something like the Noctua NH-D14 or the Phanteks PH-Tc1 4PE

Nice build.

I did want 2x8GB sticks of memory, just in case I want to add more later.

Unfortunately, I have had to replace several Seagate drives recently and my current WD drive is still going strong after 8 years, so this is just a personal preference at the moment.

I really wanted the Be Quiet Cooler but I am having difficulty finding RAM as good as my original choice, that will fit under it, any ideas?

I edited in a link to the 16GB EVO kit, same price as your choice but faster and low profile. I know it's CAS11 not 10 but this makes very little difference in the real world. How about THIS for a HDD

Thanks. This should do the trick.

Pencil me in for a crimbo card then fella lol

The Caviar Red only has a 5900 rpm spin speed.

It's an eco drive, should be better than the green. It's what I would use for storage other than the barracuda, especially as it has twice the capacity of the black you picked. It is your build after all fella, just trying to save you a few quid without compromising too much.

The Geil is rated faster. The difference in CAS from 9 to 11 is very minimal. If you prefer the colour of the G.Skill in dark blue then fair enough, that kit does look to be low profile
