Hey all

from great MeatLoaf's advice.. I came up with this spec:

speccheckploxac9.jpg

Current spec:

AMD 64 3200+ - stock speeds @ 2.0ghz
1 gig ram PC3200
X1950pro AGP 512mb
Epox Motherboard
x-fi xtreme gamer
80gig H/d + 160 H/D
PSU (unknown specs) that used to power a intel p4 1.8, gf2 + 256mb ram

I was thinking of the above mobo as I cant really afford to get a pci-e card just yet - buying a macbook :)

Now.. questions:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail

got a lower FSB (and is more expensive) than

Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.33GHz (1333FSB) - Retail

Which one's better for price?

How much would my original cpu, ram + mobo sell on ebay?

Wouldn't need a new PSU for that stuff would I?

How much could I overclock the spec'd CPU?

cheers :D

I'd buy the E6550 if the motherboard supported it because it will perform as well as the E6600 although it perhaps might not overclock quite so far (not a huge issue with those ASRock motherboards though) and it saves you money. However it isn't listed as supported so it looks like the E6600 is your choice.

Not sure, my general rule is somewhere between 1/2 and 2/3 of the current purchase price new.

Hmm, what does your PSU say on the side of the label? If it powered your current system then it is probably just about ok but ideally you'd be looking at replacing it.

Not totally sure but those ASRock motherboards seem to top out at 280-290mhz so maybe 2.6ghz(ish) going on 9x multiplier * Ram. :)

Thank you for replying :)

Ah yes jsut seen that the mobo doesn't support the E6550's FSB speed.... but doesn't that mean it's faster than the E6600? There's a £35 difference in price too =|

Why are the CPU's with an FSB1066 more expensive than the ones with a (faster?) FSB of 1333?

My PSU doens't have a label on it.. its 5 years old but I have never had a problem with it :) came with my old P4 1.9ghz spec PC. Its powering my current spec fine tho - well, theres been no noticable problems.

The CPUs with the 1066mhz FSB are the older models and there is no real incentive for Intel to reduce the price on them, as you've found out not all motherboards support the newer 1333mhz FSB. Having the faster FSB doesn't mean that it is necessarily faster than the E6600, it may be cheaper simply because Intel can produce them in greater numbers.

As to the PSU, well the only thing to do then is to try it and see what happens. :)

Okay thanks. A friend said they're releasing new models soon... shall I just order now or is it worth the wait?
