thats the parts I need and what I think is best for £700, anyone care to differ? the main thing im unsure of is ram timings so im not sure weather to get the geil black dragon stuff or this cheaper ocz stuff.. the geil is 4 4 4 12 and this is 5 5 5 18 and i read on toms hardware that timings are pretty importiant? but in real life terms will I notice this?

I do a lot of video editing (hd).

the lower timing ram is exactly 2x the price tho?

Yeh its a good build. Guessing you dont play many games?

Any any particualr reason for the Asus Maximus II? A P5Q-E will do the same job for 70quid less

Not a gaming guy nope, thats why theres a cheap card :D

Im not really sure on the mobo, I'll be running RAID and want it to be as good as possible, also I want decent onboard sound and in the past I've always spent sub £100 on motherboards so I thought I should get one of the best p45s out?

sounds like I need a mobo rethink, can you shed any light for me :)

If your not plan on gaming the 9800gt is very overpowered for general desktop use, i would change it to an ATI 4650 due to its low power but has abit of umphhh if needed.
Also, you could get a decent motherboard at 100-120£ and then buy after market sound card like the Xonar.
Sry i would link you to them but the shop has stopped working for me.

Im not really into putting another soundcard in I just let an audigy 2 zs go because I found it got in the way in the case, I quite like the idea of the formula mobo as its the top of the range p45 pretty much so it has all the bells and whistles?

as for gaming... I do occasionally but the main reason I chose that card is because programes like photoshop and premiere and after effects will start using gcard power soon more and more... ive got a 7800gtx just lying around I might use that for now and save some pennies.

True, thought im not sure if the onboard sound will be any different from the formula to the other Asus p45 ranges, i would take a guess that they will be the same, and save your self a few quid.
I forgot that photo and video editing are starting to use the graphic card but i personally dont see it being developed to its full potential and not using the card 100% if it needs to.
And by the time it is has developed, new tech wouldve have been released.
Though of course, im not totally sure, just sharing an opinion.

Anyway i would keep the 7800gtx as it can still play most games reasonable.

true true, well the card looks beefier on the formula so i was assuming it was a bit better made.. that aint the reason why im after it tho ideally if its got lots of connectivity and a great raid driver i dont care... does the p5q - e offer that? im bad with mobos!

Like others, i would spec down the mobo.
Its a gaming mobo really, for some heavy use and overclocking, just get a P5-Q or something

what about a p5q deluxe? I want to be able to clock my system a little bit nothing major tho, are the RAID controllers the same on all these top asus boards as having a fast raid is really a priority.

Considering you are paying over £400 for a socket 775 motherboard and a Q9550, why not push towards an i7 920 and a Gigabyte EX58 which comes to £433.. Little in it. The only real extra cash will be on the triple DDR3.

Considering what you're using the PC for I think you're over spending on the graphics and motherboard and under spending on the RAM. Why not buy 8gb? You're the type of user who will actually benefit from it.

Thoguh the above suggestion is best I think and what I'd do in your shoes. The triple DDR3 will also give you a nice 6gb RAM. Just cut down on your graphics card to try and make it up a bit.

because i7 is new so its probobly not the best it can be and it will run pretty hot, where as ddr2 is cheap as chips and since its been out ages the p45 will run pretty cool :)

I do have 8gb of ram ^^ lol. at the mo I have a q6600 clocked to 3.2 with 6gb of ram on a p5k board but its sold now so im moving to a raid0 system, I looked on toms hardware and ddr3 is pretty pointlessly expensive at the mo

Didn't notice the x2 on the RAM lol.

It's good stuff, it's what I have in my PC atm. Running @ 510mhz on stock volts and timings no problem so that's faster than PC8500 stuff ;)

The problem going to core i7 is also the bang for buck factor.. the ram costs loads, id need the noctura cooler which is nearly 60quid and the mobo is one of the cheaper i7 boards..

for all the extra price I dont think I'd notice it over the fastest running quad? or especially not more than a few percent?

thanks for that really helpful reply.
well sorry if isn't what you wanted to hear but you said that the i7 isn't the best it can be be which is rubbish. It's pretty much fact that the i7 is a dramatic performance leap on the C2D.

Having said that, there is nothing wrong with what you have choosen but my point is that it's not worth shelling out nearly £200 for an older P45 board when you can buy a P45 for far less.
