Finally got it running, its a belkin router (no idea what make or model ! )

Anyway, its sitting next to my pc connected through ethernet. I have my laptop connected to it thorugh wireless. Signal strength "very good" even downstairs !! Can play my MMORPG with feet up on sofa lag free !! hehe

Anyway, when i turn on my pc, at the same time as the laptop, i get an error saying duplicate name on network, or something similar.

Have i rushed something? I have a feeling ive "named" my laptop and pc the same on the network? If im right now do i fix that?

Also, on my pc i have a slave drive, how would i be able to access this from my laptop? And how can i send files to my pc from my laptop over the network?

Thanks and sorry for so many questions! This is my first try and im new to networking :)

P.S when i scan for wireless networks, i find one other called SKY followed by numbers. Could i be picking up nextdoors sky broadband or something

1. sounds like the computername on the laptop is the same as you desktop pc, you will need to change one of them. to do this right click my computer, go to properties, then on the computername tab click CHANGE then you can type whatever you want to call you pc into there :)

2. to share the slave drive you will need to right click the drive and go into "sharing and security" and select to share the drive across the network.

3. its most likely one of you neighbours has sky broadband on a wireless router. when i scan for available networks where i live i pick up quite a few.

hope this helps

Ive done this, there is now a little hand under my E drive. But i can't seem to figure out how i access this from my laptop? Its not showing up in "My Computer"

Lets assume your computer with the shared drive is called "Computer" and the shared folder is called "folder".

Just open an explorer window and type into the address bar \\computer\folder

Or, from the start menu, use the run... prompt to enter \\computer\folder

Once this has been done, you should find it listed in "My Network Places" in future.

If it don't work, check.... are they both in the same "workgroup"? (This name is set in the same place as you set the name of the computer)

Firewalls will need holes punched in them.

You may need a username and password - depending on XP Version.

You may also need to give yourself write access to that shared drive.

That should keep ya going :)

wow!

Thanks mate, i went into customize desktop in the end and added "my network places" icon to the desktop. My pc's slave drive is shown there on my pc and laptop !!

Thanks loads, that is all my questions answered. Now i dont need to download everything twice :) :) :)

Thankyou very much :)
